Show Citizen, Free Press, Review - Wednesday, June 12, 1996 - Page 14 Hospital offers Tools1 provides fun twists to tale babysitting classes By KATIIERINE t i i l i : SCHROEPPEL The fairy tale The Emperor's New Clothes has never been a particular favorite of mine. I must admit, however, that Valley Center Playhouse's musical premier of Fools Where Pink, a new rendition of the old story, has some particular twists and turns in it that provide for a fun, entertaining evening. Recently written by local residents Celeste Rickers and Miriam Latour and directed by Noreen Astin, the musical opens with the Princess Nora of Oafland (Julie Astin) running away from her kingdom and setting out to expose all those of royal blood for the vain fools that they are. In a forest near Denseland, she runs into two funny, misfit robbers (Nikk Bobo and Mike Gray) and enlists them in her quest. Meanwhile the Emperor of Denseland (Ken Shelley) is in dire need of new royal threads as he is about to marry the stuffy Prineess Hassler Yolanda (Steffie Hunsaker). He and his royal court fall easy prey to Nora's plans. The comical ending is not quite what you might expect, however. The set is sparsely and economically decorated, but the many colorful costumes designed by Rickers, as well as good, energetic characterizations by the actors (often with interesting and authentically done accents) bring the production alive. The sound is great as the court jester Ken Eager provides live music on his electric keyboard, Baby-sittin- music which he arranged. The music is simple, but engaging. Highlights include Truman B. Door (Eric Bjornson) and young Toby (Timothy Hunsaker) singing "We're Glad We're Not Grown Up,' and the final musical number by the whole cast "Shades of Pink." While all the actors do a great job, Mark Wycoff gives a standout performance as the highly egotistical Eugene LaFleur, counselor to the Emperor. Rebecca Ashmont's performance is also memorable in the supporting role as Ditsie Dee. Some of the parts are double cast including that of the Emperor who is also played by Andy Brown. This is a show that should interest children, but also has humor that keeps the adults laughing. Baby-sitter- v, 371-717- 756-585- 4. full-servi- stocks.
