Utah Power is sponsoring a contest to send four high school students to Belize, a small country in Central America. The students will attend a five-da- y Tropical Forest Ecology Course to gain an understanding of the importance and the vital functions tropical rain forests play in the local, regional and global environment. Students will be selected based on several criteria, including an essay competition and a demonstrated interest in the environment either through school course work, lifestyle choices, outside work or participation in a community environmental program. The essay question is: "Describe an environmental problem and your solution to it." To be eligible to participate, students must be enrolled in a high school within Utah Power's or Pacific Power's service area, have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better, and be enrolled in a science class or belong to a science or environmental club during the 1995-9school year. Each school that chooses to participate will select one finalist. An independent panel then will select four winners and two alternates in late April. Winners will be announced by May 1. The winning students will fly to Belize to attend the course July The course is taught by the Programme for Belize, a private forest management and preservation program that promotes conservation of the natural heritage of Belize and the wise uses of its natural resources. A chaperone will accompany the students. April ., Citizen, Free Press, Review Wednesday, April 3, 1996 - Page usinoss E3ws Utah Power to sponsor contest Thurs.-Sat- Corbet Trailer Sales, Inc. p. Dr. Ghiz who has been practicing for over 27 years received his D.D.S. degree from West Virginia University and his Masters degree from the University of Manatoba. He chose to open his practice in Utah, because his wife Annette, whom he met while attending school, was from Salt Lake City. They now have seven children and three grandchildren. "We like to see children at eight or nine years of age," said Dr. Ghiz, "to check if everything's okay.
