Houghton is a graduate of Moody Bible Institute, Pillsbury College and Grand Rapids Baptist Seminary. He also studied 2 12 years at Central Baptist Seminary in Minneapolis and was ordained to the ministry by Faith Baptist Church in St. Paul, Minnesota. He has several Master's and Doctorate degrees from universities and seminaries around the United States. He taught at Denver Baptist Bible College for 12 years and since 1983 has been teaching at Faith Baptist Bible College and Theological Seminary in Ankeny, Iowa.
