Bond ratings are an indicator of risk based on the individual municipalities ability to service its debt payments. Ratings start at AAA, AA, A, BBB, BB and B. Municipal bonds are issued by states and municipalities to finance schools, highways, hospitals, roads, airports, bridges, water works and other public projects. By Supreme Court decision, the interest on many of these project issues is exempt from federal income taxes. The interest may be subject to state and local taxes in some cases. Most states however do exempt interest from state taxes. Muni bonds are generally attractive because they are considered second only to U.S. Government bonds in quality. Muni bonds can provide current income, the benefits of liquidity and professional management. With this kind of investment, you should pay particular attention to the "taxable equivalent yield." This is the yield that one would have to earn on a taxable investment in order to compete e with the yield on investments. The federal tax brackets are as follows: 15 percent, 28 percent, 31 percent, 36 percent and 39.6 percent.
