Pioneers lose opener to Cavemen By ROD MANTOR Things are looking good at the football stadium here in Lehi; new paint, green grass, ( real grass at that ) fresh field and clean grounds. Things are sounding good also. There is a re al echoing of optimism from players andcoaches. Last years team was much the same in spirit, but this season there is one slight difference according to head coach Jeff Kilts. "We have no star players this year and everyone has to contribute and this team has to be dedicated to being just that, a team. I am more excited with this group of guys than I have been in some time," Kilts said. Now before you write these guys off or dump them for Friday night at the movies hear them out. Yes, they got beat pretty bad. How bad? Real bad But, let's put things into perspective. American Fork is a big school and they have a good football team. (59-6- ). really. We are going to better our kicking game. Offensively we are working on our passing game, even more than we did last year. The coaching staff is working harder not only to be better instructors but to be better psychologists. "No, really, the gamehaschanged over the years and the days ofVince Lombardy are long gone and you need to motivate these guys in different ways and sometimes that is the most difficult part. But, I will say, there is a lot of pride at Lehi and so far this group has been outstanding." It must have been difficult for lead on the Pioneers who took a a 58 yard pass play from Matt Felix to Lloyd Hunter, and then get shelled as they did. But, there was no crying and they were in there fighting till the end. Most of what coach Kilts said about the team stood to be true. They were a little unsettled and one could notice the lack of experi 6-- 0 ing, like the new weight room, a new computer system and best of all a great attitude among the players. They all are working hard." Strength:"Our linebackers are the first thought that come to min d and we have some better depth, we are going to try to use more players one way. Other than that, the players attitude is a real strength." Weakness: "The same old story, lack of experience. We have a mere handful of seasoned talent out there. But most of the region is in the same shape, with maybe the exception of Park City. We will be okay." The line: "Probably as good as last year, but we don't have the depth here we would like. There are a lot of new faces out there, but the kids are tough." The backs: All new guys, we have a couple of speedsters and three big backs who know how to grind it out three or four yards as a time. These are pound guys who also know how to block." Quarterback: "Not a clue, would you believe we have four viable candidates for quarterback, and it is completely up for grabs on who will get the nod to start. And the strange part of this is that we have three seniors and a freshman." How is the freshman doing? "He is right in there, holding his own." Any changes from the past: "Not ence. The defense had a little trouble containing the outside run and the counter plays confused them somewhat. But, the Caveman didn't just push them between the goal posts, they were beaten on the long plays on the forementioned patterns. And considering the size difference, the Pioneers did alright on both sides of the line. Yes, there were some missed tackles and there were more turnovers than they wanted; that is normal for any young team. We all saw a lot of different faces out there, different styles of runners and a shufflingin and out on the linemen. Everyone was anxious for the season to get underway and I am sure everyone wanted a different start than this. Head coach Jeff Kilts comment after the game? I didn't ask. I will assure you one thing the players and students at LHS will do well this season. They always have.
