He mixed in a little water and began to stir with a twig. "What's that?" Port asked. "Paint," Sylvester said as he poured a little pool onto the table and began pushing the new lead balls through it, coating each one thoroughly with the white paint "Why are you doing that?" "Follow me," Sylvester said as he stepped out the door onto the wooden porch. He picked up a garden hoe and a shovel, handing the see in the morning," Sylvester said, suddenly turning his attention to Mary Blackfeather who had been sitting on the bed, her knees drawn to her chest, watching the two men. Leaving the freshly painted balls to dry, Post hobbled over to his cot to try and get a little sleep. Sylvester blew out the light. "Are we going to start shooting now?" Port asked when they had "YouU hoe to Port. "Thought we were going to start shooting," Port said. "We are." "With a hoe and a shovel?" "Want to be able to hit a silver dollar in the air?" "Sure." "Then follow me." Port followed, having no idea what Sylvester intended to do. The two men walked across the meadow to a small draw. They followed the bottom of the draw about fifty feet until it made a sharp curve. Sylvester stopped, instructing Port to clear all the grass and brush from the top of the outside bank down to the bottom of the draw. 1 dont want to see anything but clean, black loam," Slyvester explained. "Clean off every blade and twig. I want it smooth and black." "Mind telling me why?" Port asked. "You'll find out soon enough. Start digging." Sylvester climbed out of the draw and headed back to the cabin while Port began hacking away at the grass and brush. The work increased the pain in his wounds, but he persisted, wonder ing why Sylvester wanted the ground cleared, hoping the gun fighter knew what he was doing. By the time Port finished, Sylvester had returned, carrying Port's gun, a small keg of powder, an old shirt, and a pouch containing the freshly painted lead balls. He placed everything on the ground about 30 feet from where Port had finished clearing thebank. Port put down the tools and joined Sylvester who was wrapping the old shirt around the barrel of Port's pistol. When Sylvester loaded the weapon, Port was surprised at how little powder he used. When the white ball was driven home, Sylvester turned to Port. "Forget everything you ever learned about shooting a pistol. Pretend your gun is a long fishing pole, that instead of shooting you are just reaching out and touching your target" 1 dont understand." Port said. "Shoot towards the bank." "But you've wrapped a shirt around the barrel. I cant see the site." That s because I want vou to site. Focus barrel and the ignore your eyes and all your attention on the black dirt. Try to see the white bullet approaching the target" "You can't see a bullet in flight," Port objected. "You can if the bullet is white, the target area is black, and the powder load is small enough," Sylvester insisted. "Try it" Port pointed the pistol at the black dirt and fired. "Did you see the white ball?" Sylvester asked. "Yes." "Where did it hit?" (To be continued) 4 Days Only Wed.-Sa- t.
