Show Free Press - Wednesday, March ( Neal Chadwick's big chance to be a fastpitch softball pitcher came when his American Fork mentor, Marriner Mitchell, called him in from the outfield and asked him to pitch for the regular pitcher who'd become tired in a y game several years ago. Neal was slightly bewildered. He'd never thrown a softball except from the outfield to the infield. And, he'd never expected to be on the mound in an important league game. But he didn't mess up that opportunity. He realized that he could get the ball over the plate effectively, and Marriner's team won the game. That incident led to Neal's for emergence as a pitching all-stone of Utah's championship all-stteams, Miller Toyota. After his initial start as pitcher, he found that he had a knack for pitching a softball. He'd formerly been known as a premier hitter, and even though he maintains a great batting average, he's become somewhat of a legend for his pitching prowess. After a couple more years pitching for Mitchell's team in the old y league, he was picked up by Miller-Toyot- a of Salt Lake City, and has gained valuable experience pitching in the tough Salt Lake League. Miller Toyota has traveled to tournaments in Victoria, B.C., Calgary, Sioux City, Decatur, 111., Clearwater, Fla., Los Vegas, and because of fifth place finish in the Nationals last year, the Salt Lake team, along with Penncort of Sioux City, Iowa, were invited to participate in an exhibition tour in New Zealand. The first, second, and third place teams in the nationals declined the invitation, so the Penncort and Miller-Toyot- a teams accepted New Zealand Softball Association's invitation to participate on the fast-pitc-h tour of that softball-craz- y country. The tour included games in Aukland, Wairapa, Hastings, and Hamilton, Carterton, Wellington, New Zealand where the Utah team compiled a n record playing New Zealand's top softball teams. New Zealand picked up the estimated $130,000 tab it cost for the team's expenses. "All the players paid for was their wives' air fare." Neal said. Marcia, Neal's wife, joined him for the last half of the three week jtour and "had a lot of fun." Neal explained that the team started their tour at the north end of the. North Island and worked their way to the south end of the North Island. co-cit- ar ar co-cit- Miller-Toyota- , Page 9 GHMOJSGffi Utah may lower age for hunting Neal Chadwick invited to New Zealand for softball exhibition , , 19X8 - 's "Cricket is the number one sport there and softball is number two. Miller-Toyot- a played all the top teams in New Zealand, including the national team. "They really beat up on us," Neal said. Those were some of our first games and we were kinda out of practice; but we beat them on the last of our tour. Everything was so well organized. It was like playing the world series here. There was probably a low of 1,500 fans to a high of 6,000. Our games were on national TV twice. "The bests fields were in Aukland and Wellington. It was like playing on Derks Field there. The worst fields were like playing in Lehi," Neal commented. "Fans would hang on fences and talk to you. They'd ask for autographs." They served lots of mutton and lamb. They had lamb and lamb hot dogs, mutton sausage. We were traveling out on the fifth day and when the players spotted a MacDonalds.
