The male team member provides a support system for the family of the victim and others who may be significantly affected by the rape. Because of the nature of the work, the volunteers receive a substantial amount of training to allow them to understand their position. Caywood said that volunteers who are interested in working on a rape crisis team must attend the next training session which will be starting Saturday, Jan. 9, and run through Wednesday, Jan. 13. The training is 10 hours on Saturday, eight on Sunday and four hours on the last three training days. of the substantial Because amount of time spent in training the volunteers, they are asked to make commitment and stay a long-terwith the program for at least eight months. No one says it's easy, juggling a desire to be supportive of those you care about against a demand to prove your loyalty. But it is important at such times to avoid being drawn into a conflict that is not your fight. When someone asks you to choose sides, remind them that their argument is not with you, nor is your argument with either party. Getting involved in these kinds of disputes can be tempting because the request for support gives you a feeling of being needed. But it is important to remember that in the long run, the surest way to feel secure with your relationships is to avoid fighting other people's fights. Being an ally may be temporarily reassuring, but it is more important to believe that people care for you as you, and not just as someone useful to their cause. If you find yourself frequently being drawn into arguments not of your own making, you may need to examine what needs this is fulfilling, and how you can better gain personal satisfaction from constructive relationships.
