" " - Lehi track stars qualify for state ' at Juab Invitational Saturday When the Pioneer track team traveled to Nephi to participate in the annual Juab Invitational, their intentions were to qualify as many as possible for the state meet planned for May 16 at BYU. Coach Ed Achziger was very pleased with his team's performance because four boys and eight girls qualified to participate in the state finals. The boys were fourth overall and the girls accumulated enough points to take second place. Kerry Perez qualified in the 100 yard dash; Eric White qualified in the shotput by taking second and winning the discus event. Brent Powell won the high jump and nearly broke a record while qualifying and taking the event. Coach Achziger feels that Brent is and the best in competition and has set his heart on jumping for a school record. 2-- Another standout was Steve Veach who soared 11 feet 10 inches pole vaulting. "It was a beautiful day, the competition was good and we had a great day," Achziger said. In the Girls Meet, Lehi's young ladies came in second to Wasatch, but did a great job by qualifying the following: Shantell Smith qualified in the 100 meter hurdles and the 100 meter dash. Audra Morris won the 100 m. dash to secure a berth at state. Lehi's girls also won the 400 m. relay. Relay team members are: Jennifer Kirkham, Laura Carson, Shannon Morgan and Alisa Webb. "They really looked good," Achziger said. Audra Morris also qualifed in the 300 m. hurdles and Shantell won the right to compete in the 200 m. dash at state. Shannon Harris qualified in the 3200 m. run, and Laura Carson qualified in the shotput. Jennifer Kirkham won the right to compete at state in the high jump.
