Show Free Press - Wednesday, April 29. 1987 - Page 7 Pioneer soccer team remains in 1st The Pioneers have won three of their last five games and are presently in first place in soccer competition. The key game was a battle of the undefeated Waterford Falcons, who hadn't lost a game in two years. Lehi turned them back 32. Waterford played it's usual sound, disciplined game, but the hungry Pioneers outhustled them and beat them to the ball to grab the victory. This win put Lehi all alone in first place, the only undefeated team. Coach Jim Howe was very proud of his players because two Pioneer starters were on a biology field trip to California. Coach Howe, thinking the trip would be important to their education, agreed to the players taking the trip, even though the upcoming soccer games were crucial game of the season. On Monday, April 13, Lehi traveled to Ogden to play another private high school, St. Josephs. The Pioneers turned the Jays back by the same 2 score, and kept their undefeated record intact. In both games, Lehi's fullbacks, Peter Dastrup, Shawn Porter and Bryce Kolterman, did an outstanding job of stopping the opponents' attack. In soccer coaches usually put their d players on the front line and fullbacks have the pressure-cooke- r job of containing them. "Our fullbacks have strength, stong legs as they have to take blasts off their heads and chests." Howe explained. "As hard as the opposing team can kick the ball, our fullbaks will stop it cold with their head or chest. The goalie can use his hands but other defenders can't. It takes a lot of skill when the ball is zooming at you to keep the hands down and deflect the ball with the body." Howe continued. The following week, the soccer team traveled to Salt Lake Luthern to play a game. Lehi defeated them Coach Howe usually makes it a point not to run up the score, but there was no jayvee game that day so Lehi didn't bring many substitutes along. 2-- r ) - '. .4 " i 0 valuable coup Celebrating our new location in Lindon. We also have Freshman Sam Wadley seeing a lot of varsity action," Howe bragged. Friday at Lehi Wasatch Academy defeated the Pioneers 1 after a 2-- " the wily Rowland team cnipped in two goals.
