Blackham said the average mother there has 10 children. "Of those 10, only three reach the age of 10." According to Spotts, when AFH moved to its new location six years ago, some of the equipment from the old hospital was stored. "When the hospital moved, we stored some equipment that we weren't sure we would use. When I found out about the program we were able to donate some of that equipment. It's exciting to find out what's happened to it and know it is being put to good use." The materials donated by AFH are indeed being used. The delivery table is in a new clinic outside of Chihuahua, Mexico. According to Dr. Eran A. Call, assistant director of American Indian Services at BYU, "The last time I was down there, they were just getting ready to finish one of the clinics and put the furnishings, including the delivery table, in." Call says most of the donations American Indian Services receive "We comes through have not been too aggressive in soliciting donations," he said, "but word-of-mout- h. "The laws and standards for hospitals here don't allow the use of some things that are perfectly good," Call said. "We are able to box those things up and send them to the people there for use. It's the same with old equipment - we can't use it here, but the people are thrilled to have it." There are plenty of doctors to treat the people, according to Call. "In return for government-funde- d schooling, doctors agree to provide one year of free service. We have the people, all we need are supplies," he said. Bruce Bird, the supervisor of central processing at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City and president of the Utah State Association of Central Service Managers, had the opportunity to travel to Mexico to see firsthand what circumstances were like. "I came back feeling like every area of my life was lived in excess," he said. "Whatever little we can do helps so much." In addition to medical supplies. Call said other things are sent to Mexico. Heart rate time is monitored twice s during the class, about of the way through and again at the end because it is important that the heart rate is watched. Mrs. Carlson said in addition to the aerobics class, they offer a complete health program, including correct diet. The classes are held at the Coop D'Fun building, 491 E. 1200 South in American Fork, with classes at 9 a m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday or, for the early riser, at 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday and Thursday. Baby sitting is available for mothers who need to bring their child or children with them, the instructors noted. Mrs. Carlson said they teach an "intermediate" class in aerobics, including the correct way to warm-u- p prior to actually doing the exercise, and then cooling down at the class conclusion. Fork Hospital. In 1986, American Fork Hospital donated equipment and supplies to the Indian people in Mexico. The donation was handled through BYU American Indian Services; the materials are now being used by the Indians. "It's like gold to them," said Dr. Max Blackham, talking about the donations during a presentation to hospital staff Monday. Dr. Blackham has been involved in the program for 15 years. According to Dr. Blackham, a delivery table donated by the hospital was one of the most appreciated gifts. Before women who were lucky enough to get to the health clinic to have a baby had only a wooden, makeshift table. "That's what inspired me," said Barbara Spotts, manager of central processing at AFH. "I've had babies and I can't imagine having a ' er tendency to have a weight problem and she was determined &he wouldn't be heavy. "I have found that in addition to keeping my weight down, I have an abundance of energy by keeping to the regimented routine," she said. The class is held five times a week for convenience, Carlene said, and she recommends a person come at least three times a week. "We've found you have to come two times a week in order to feel better and more if you need to lose weight," she said. The instructors said they offer toning and firming for problem areas as well as the general exercise to help you feel better. The first visit is free, they said, inviting residents to "come join the fun - tone up and feel great."
