"Don't tell me you don't see anything wrong with what they did," she argued. "that's not the point," Ben said. "I'm just saying that perhaps we shouldn't be too quick to judge a group of Indians for practicing their religion. They broke the boy's hands and tied him up believing his cries would keep evU spirits away from the Indian who died. What gives us the right to interfere?" d "I forgot how you are," she said. "You're avoiding my question," Ben said patiently. "What gives us the right to step between an Indian and his customs?" "This boy gives us the right," she said quietly so as not to awaken the child. "You saw how he was tried to that grave, left to cry until he died. You saw how they smashed his little hands. How can you even suggest that decent people look the other way and allow this kind of cruelty to continue?" "Are you saying that Indians shouldn't be allowed to practice religious traditions that hurt innocent people who don't share those same religious views?" "That's what I'm saying." "Then you're a hypocrite," Ben concluded. "I have no idea what you are talking about." "You and your friends are just like the Indians who tied this boy to the grave." "You don't know what you're cold-hearte- saying." "Because you have a religious belief that a man should have only one wife, you are bent on crushing an entire people who believe differently. Hundreds of pregnant women are in hiding. Hundreds of good men are in jail. Not criminals, but men and women. their religious Why? Because beliefs concerning marriage are different than yours. Why does your belief in monogamous marriage give you the right to hound good men and women to the ends of the earth? You and your kind are no different than the Indians who ' smashed this child's hands and tied him to that grave." Nellie, just looked at Ben, saying t nothing. His face was red with anger. "If polygamy could be stopped by smashing the hands of Mormon children and tying them to graves, you and your friends would do it," he said. "Chaste women are running from your officers and having babies in caves. Honorable men are rotting in your cold prison cells. Children are without parents to care for them. All because of a stupid religious belief shared by you and your friends that a man should not be allowed to love and care for more than one woman. You, your friends and those Indians are alike, forcing innocent people to suffer because of your religious beliefs." Ben waited for Nellie to respond. She didn't, at least not at first. SULAdnE FUNK S By MARCELLA WALKER out. The boys and girls who perform in the various roles of this play are ideal for the parts. Wes Whitby, Jr. is a perfect Tom and performs like a veteran of many plays. Likewise, his friend Huckleberry Finn, played by Jerry J. Morse, is delightful and convincing in his role. - Julie Stansfield as Mary, Tom's., cousin, defends Tom and tries to see his good points much to the consternation of the other cousin, Sid, played by Richard McDermott. These kids stay right jn character and act just like you would expect siblings to behave. They were great. Shelly Peterson is a very pretty Becky Thatcher and she charmingly overwhelms poor Tom who is smitten from the very first sight of """" SALE ' I I -- w II " FUNK'S l&ll uTt " 14' Deluxe UCiagon uiauenger q ail neciangic vciuac 7'xl4' Rectangle Deluxe D 1 Best - (&m 57 MAKE YOUR MOVE TOWARD HIGHER AND FUNK'S YIELDS-PLA- NT 7! Sorenson again nearly takes ones breath away with a superb performance as Muff Potter, the drunken sexton. Janet Bylund is Aunt Polly. You can feel her compassion for this young waif, Tom, who has come to live with her, and also her consternation with his antics. Any mother of a roughneck boy like Tom would feel the same way.
