Playing, in what could be the last time for several years in Utah, the NCAA staged a Western al at the University of Utah Special Events Center last week. Here's some notes on the two day event. Of the eight teams playing in Salt Lake City, two were and did not belong in the tournament. Idaho Stage, winner of the Big Sky post season tournament and Central Michigan winner in the MidAmerican Conference, gave critics of the expanded 64 team tournament format plenty of ammunition. UNLV using vastly superior talent crushed the Idaho State squad, leading by as many as 38 points during the game while Central Michigan was humiliated over-matche- d Even though those spectators. schools carry their respective states names, only one player was from Nevada or Wyoming. UNLV has Freddie Banks, from Las Vegas, on the team while Wyoming has no player from the Cowboy state on its team. Kansas State has the youngest Lon looking coaching staff. Kruger, in his first year as the Wildcat coach, looks less than 30 years old and the assistant coaches look younger. Charles Coles, head man at Central Michigan, got my vote as the "wildest" coach in the tournament. Trailing by 17 points with :05 seconds to play, he was still screaming, yelling and watching the clock as though his team had a chance to pull the game out and was Fennis Dembo, Texas, jZhs Pr'ce on sBrake For most cars Prices effective & 29' , , 3fl,f Ijw J. Sidney Wicks, a former great UCLA player and now a "volunteer assistant coach" at the Los Angeles school, should be put on the payroll. His outfit, contrasted with the neat suits of the other coaches, looked like it came right off the Salvation Army rack. His suit coat had sleeves at least four inches too short while the baggy pants appeared to have been tied at the ankle to keep them from being caught in his bicycle chain. At the b eginning of this article I said that it may be several years before the NCAA tournament returns to a site in Utah. The reason is money. Other places have bigger facilities and are drawing bigger crowds. For example, there were over 30,00(1 fans at the in Syracuse. New York, while the Western Regional this weekend will be held in the Seattle King Dome that seats more than 4(UK!0 lor basketball The NCAA tournament is the in college crowning jcwell basketball and I hope it does come to Utah in the future. Dembo, along with 6'1" Eric Leckner still have a Georgia brought the fewest players, just 10, to the tournament. Head coach Hugh Durham lost a player to injury and two players to poor grades du ring the season and still made it into the tourney with only seven scholarship plavers left on the team. UCLA's Reggie Miller got my vote as the tourneys biggest "hotdog." Miller has refined to a science the art of holding, grabbing and falling down while making it look like the opponent was guilty of the deed. It's too bad because he is as good a shooter as there is in college ball today. UNLV's mascot is the "Runnin' Rebels", but Jerry "The Shark" Tarkanian, UNLV head coach, has had such an impact on the school that the mascot on the floor was dressed in a cute shark outfit. The UNLV pep band's favorite number . native, A Wyoming, was the best player. His win. Vv the theme from the movie 'Jaws". The other opening round games were exciting with Kansas State edging Georgia in overtime and Wyoming getting by Virginia in a tight four pointer. The only player from Utah in the was Payson Western High graduate, Gordon Bean. Bean went to Ricks and then to Idaho State. Although the University of Utah Special Events Center is the second best place in Utah to watch a basketball game, (Weber State's Dee Events Center being the best) little or no evidence exists of thought or planning concerning traffic and parking there. And to top off the lack of planning, University officials charge $2 a car for use of the poor parking facilities. UNLV and Wyoming were the obvious crowd favorites and were cheered loudly by the 14,000 plus Syjs$P mm WE MOVED OUR 0REM STORE by UCLA. ryfSty T II U MU u (U Includes fabrics only.
