Ironically, some of the best fishing in Utah comes during the holiday season, when it's furthest from most everyone's mind. Here's rundown of some of the best bets for December and January. A perennial favorite among northern Utah anglers is the annual cisco run at Bear Lake, which usually takes place Current predictions call for an open water run (no ice this year), which can make it difficult to net the diminutive risrn But fishing for the Cisco's jumbo cousin, the Bonneville whitefish, and for bragging-siz- e cutthroat trout can be very good in December. A favorite technique that will catch both cisco and whitefish is to use a small teardrop lure tipped with a waxworm. during the winter months. An often overlooked fishery mM mm Winter fishing tactics BY PHIL DOUGLASS Information Officer Year-roun- d fishing offers a wide variety of quality fishing opportunities for Utah anglers. Crystal clear streams and the lakes brings promise of iced-ove- r great anticipation to winter anglers. Winter conditions change the habits of fish, and often require a change of angling tactics. Proper technique can produce outstanding results. The Rocky Mountain whitefish has long been an underrated game fish. It is closely related to the trout family and has feeding habits similar to trout. The whitefish is great table fare and an aggressive sport fish. It is locally abundant in the Weber, Logan, Blacksmith Fork and Provo rivers. Be sure to use the d right bait. The stonefly larvae is more effective than the Whitefish hold in the pockets and deep riffles. The yellow perch is another fish gaining in popularity. These small light-phase- dark-phase- d. but tasty fish rank among the best in table qualities. Yellow perch take almost any lure readily. Small jigs, parts of perch and waxworms produce good results. Deer Creek and Yuba reservoirs produce good with Yuba fishing after ice-uReservoir producing perch from 10 to 13 inches. Utah streams can provide excellent winter trout fishing. The best fishing takes place on different streams at different times due to changing water temperatures. The Green River, for example, has a slow cooling rate which extends ideal fall conditions into winter, keeping trout in a lethargic state. Warm weather before the spring runoff often improves fishing on the colder streams.
