Show Citizen, Press, Review, Tues., Dec. 31, 1J85 - Page 9 'Young entertain in prime time Old-Time- rs' Between the group there are strong ties; Fred and Dot are brother and sister. Fred and Inez are married. Jim is a nephew to Fred. Fred and Inez live in Alpine, Doris (Dot) lives in American Fork and By SHARON MORREV are not The "Young your ordinary New Year's Eve three piece band. They may not play the latest hard rock tunes; instead they play more than a hundred old favorites and popular dance tunes. They bring back memories of the past, songs that have marked anniversarys, weddings, those special times. They don't charge a lot for their services, often just enough to cover expenses, but they bring an impressive combination of experience and talent to their performances that's hard to put a price tag to. And the most unique part? Each member of the group is at least 70 years of age. are The "Young Fred Forbes, James A. (Jim ) Carter and Doris F. Petersen and together with their "Mistress of Ceremonies" Inez Forbes and their guitar players; Don and Reese Hansen, they've been entertaining people in Utah Valley for nearly 10 years. But some members of the band have been laying down lively tunes for over half a century. "Actually the first time we played together as the Young was in 1977," tells Fred, "but I had my own group before that (The Forbes Family Orchestra) and Jim had his own (Carter's Orchestra)." "Jim started playing for dances when he was 12 years old. 1 was 15. My dad and my brothers and I played together for years, my dad on the banjo, my brothers on the violin," continues Fred, "I played the drums and the saxophone and JimisfromLehi. Even their guitar players are brothers and "shoestring relatives." As a musical ensemble, they travel all over the Utah and Salt Lake valleys, playing for LDS Relief Society dinners and socials, Senior Citizen parties, family and weddings. They provide music that's easy on the ears, familiar to most people and tempting to dance to. "We have a lot of tunes from the 30's and 40's, some even further back than that." says Jim. "It's popular music, dance music, music." That music includes "Shiek of Araby," "If You Knew Susie Like I Know Susie," "Anytime," "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles" and medley numbers such as "Melody of Love, Now is the Hour and Silver Moon," which is a favorite with audiences. Sometimes there's a comic touch to the entertainment as Inez dresses Rose" or Fred up for "Second-Handons a comic nose and eyeglasses and cavorts to "The West, The Nest and You!" They enjoy making music, making a crowd smile. Sometimes they have to improvise; go on without a piano, work in odd locations. One time they even saved the day when they had to play in the dark. "We were playing in Lehi for a sang." Fred sings the lead in the group as Golden Wedding the night the power it exists today, plus playing the went out, you know?" recalls Inez, and "There was no power for the guitars saxophone, his "whistle" various other instruments. and no electricity for piped in music. Dot says they are sometimes "gallivanting" four and five nights a week around Christmastime. It tickles them to entertain at hospitals and rest homes. Many of the patients they visit are younger than they are. They like ! play for Old Folks parlies "We call ourselves the Young because we are just that, young at heart." says Inez. "And this helps us stay young." Actually it was when Fred retired that the musical trio officially came together. One Sunday Fred was listening to LDS Church President Spencer W. Kimball gave an address urging members of the Church to use their talents to bring happiness to others. "Fred prevailed on Jim and Dot to get to practicing and here we are," beams Inez. "Our first job was to entertain at a High Priests parly in Alpine." Old-Time- Iff? "Since then, there's been so many events. We go up to the Heber Hospital, down to Ferron. over to Provo. Except for a little for gas and to pay our guitar players we don't charge very much. We just enjoy sharing our music with others." They don't usually book for New Year's Eve because their families often have parlies and gatherings for them to attend. Between them, they have a lot of grandkids and family "prevailing upon them for their talents" loo. "We are plenty busy," cautions Inez, "We are not looking for a lot more business. just thought people' would like to know about us and what we do. It is fun. We do enjoy it and I don't know how much longer we can keep this going." Fred is experiencing problems with his eyesight so the little band may have to shut down this next year, but Inez is optimistic. "We've made so many friends. We've had such a good time. We'll still have good times " To contact the Young call Inez Forbes at or Jim Carter at 1 Setting the mood with the music, the Young Forbes sings lead, plays saxophone, Jim Carter's on Old-Time- 9k 1 camping - on the forest ap- proximately March 15, 1986.
