Show 1- - 50 UTAH 5067 expires F PRESS ,m SOUTH EAST SPILT LAKE CITY 467 UT 84111 Vol. 7, No. r- - ' New Year's resolutions are made to be broken, for most folks. Shirley Scown is different. She made a resolution over 15 years ago and is still keeping it. She decided, after attending her first T.O.P.S. meeting, to lose 100 pounds. Now, 15 years and 100 pounds later, Shirley is a petite, lighthearted dynamo. "You can get to a point where you're despairing. I happened to be in the right place at the right time," Shirley acknowledged. She still T.O.P.S. attends meetings. "I need the discipline of weighing in every week. "I have found some of my best friends by attending T.O.P.S. meetings. The members have a problem. They need the support and caring of others. They find that support by going to the meetings," Shirley said. When Shirley was getting close to age 40, she decided that even though she couldn't do anything about the calendar, she could do something about her weight. That's when her friend took her to THE meeting. Impressed by what she saw and heard, she made the resolution. Many young married women who are overweight just hide out, acwife cording to this youthful-lookinand mother. She quoted one mother who said, "My children didnt even know I could swim because they'd never seen me in a swimsuit." Some of those people actually hide out, stay home, and buy their clothes at a tent and awning shop. They don't like buying clothes until they lose weight, according to Shirley. Her husband, Norman, is very proud of his wife, and the couple's three children are very proud of their mother. "Some kids are ashamed of their moms. They don't even want them to come to school for plays and programs." But, the attractive weight-los- s advocate states emphatically that dieting should be done according to a doctor's orders. "T.O.P.S. doesn't want members who want to go on a fad diet, like liquids or those who concentrate on just one type of food." the solve doesnt T.O.P.S. & If1 W. cents a single copy year in review Changes were positive for Lehi during 1985 V: . 50 31, 1985 The Resolution has stood time's test Tuesday, December 54 Many positive things occurred during 1985 in Lehi - positive things that gave Lehi citizens new hope for the luture. Shirley said. "She told me that before she lost her weight she was as big as a horse and men customers wouldn't even offer to carry luggage and packages for her. After she lost weight, they were very eager to help out." Shirley won state and international titles and since losing those 100 pounds, she has filled just in the office about every organization.
