When purchasing a down garment, cheek the label for specific care procedures. The International Fabricare Institute has done considerable testing on dow n and has established that down can be successfully cleaned in any of the three solvents used by drycleaners, including chlorinated solvent. None of the solvents have any adverse effect on the down. Although some care labels suggest cleaning in a particular solvent, IFI has found no basis for this related to down itself or to any of the down garments tested. Occasionally down garments do not to respond satisfactorily drycleaning. After drycleaning the shell may show dark, greasy looking stains. This is caused by excess oils left on the down when the garment was made. It is not caused by improper drycleaning. In such cases the garment can be successfully washed by your drycleaner to correct the phenomenon. This problem is unusual. The majority of down garments on the market today do respond well to drycleaning w ithout additional washing procedures. Your drycleaner can also give special attention to stains on down garments and can renew finishes when necessary. Downs can be washed at home, either in a home washing machine or by hand, but it is a rather demanding process. When down is wet it compresses into hard little lumps. It will look as if you have "killed" the garment. Down takes a very long time to dry, up to several hours in the home dryer. Down should not be dried at temperatures higher than 140 F. Because many of the fabrics used to make down garments are water resistant, if not waterproof, this can also slow down the drying process. Down must be tumble dried to fluff up completely. It cannot be air Some manufacturers dried. recommend that you put tennis balls or testes- - shoes into the dryer with a down item to help fluff it up in the drying process. Down items need lots of space in the washer and dryer and should not be washed in a mixed load. Large, bulky items such as comforters and sleeping bags present special difficulties because they are often loo large for the home washing machine. Most home washers do not rinse quilted items adequately. Detergents left on the garment can cause streaks and shaded areas on the garment and contibute to a loss of water repellency. Also, some stains will not respond to laundering and must be removed with special spotting techniques available to your drycleaner. j r Ml I Mm water-repelle- We care about KAY HUTCHINGS your clothing! 3:15.5 Q3O0Gtl Sun. 1, 3 Daily 5. 7. 9 Fri..
