Show ?ree Press - Wednesday, January 9, 1985 - Page 9 c Sports schedule spirts The Pioneer ladies basketball team played the Jordan High Beetdiggers Tuesday, but results were not known at press time. The ladies are anxious to get back in action after a long holiday respite. They have a date with Carbon at Lehi Thursday. This is the first of their region games and should be a thriller. Lehi bests Tooele in basketball Too much Lehi height and poor Tooele foul shooting spelled doom for the host Tooele Buffaloes Saturday in a second confrontation with the Pioneers as the home team lost 1 to the Lehi five. Tooele got the early lead on the visiting Pioneers and held a four-poiedge at the first quarter, but ten field goals by the Lehi quint compared with five for1 the Buffs put the stopper on any hopes the Tooeleans had of upsetting the Pioneers. At the half Lehi led by six, The third period was closer at 7 for a quarter score of Kevin Southwick was his usual dependable self inside as he scored eight from the field and four of seven from the charity stripe. Bryan Smith did not have one of his best games with five points, but his ball handling down to the wire proved helpful as he controlled the ball in the fourth quarter and shot three of four from the charity stripe. Lott had four of four from the foul lane in the final three minutes. Eric Schmaker, a fine shooting forward for the Buffs ended up their top scorer with seven from the field and two of five from the line. Tooele was whistled for 17 fouls to Lehi's 13. e scorer for the Pioneers as he dropped in three from outside and had seven of eight from the charity stripe. As a team the Lehi five shot 54 percent from the field and 72 percent from the line. Tooele, on the other i literally hundreds thousands of Utah sportsmen - fish hatcheries. Fish hatcheries have been around Utah for a long time - since 1899 when the first hatchery was built at the "Spring Runs" in Murray, later to become known as the Scott Avenue Hatchery. It cost less than $2000 to build. Today's modern hatcheries cost millions. Not all Utah fish hatcheries, however, are modern. Most fish hatcheries in Utah are older stations, built many years ago to modern specifications of the day. Today, many of those hatcheries are in dire need of repair. Midway, Springville, Beaver, Fountain Green, Whiterpcks, Loa and Kamas hatcheries all came due for repairs at the same time. Renovation costs for the entire hatchery system are now astronomical. To compound the financial bur-de- r, inflation has eaten into the financial capability of the Division of Wildlife Resources to keep up station repairs. We have prioritized the need for hatchery renovation. Mammoth Creek Hatchery, formerly Panguitch, was totally renovated at a cost of over $3 million dollars. Several hatcheries have undergone partial rebuilding or technological advancement, or will undergo complete renovation as funds become available. , New technology may provide a partial solution to today's hatchery dilemma. Design changes, oxygen injection, water Some of the necessary work can be done if the DWR is granted an increase in fishing license fees. An $18 fishing license would provide enough revenue to begin to raise hatcheries up to standard in the next 10 years; .
