Show rree Press - Wednesday, January 9, 1985 - Page 6 Utah Valley Family Support Center aims to prevent child abuse Utah Valley Family Support Center, a Provo agency which offers programs aimed at preventing abuse of children, opened its doors last July. According to Jini Roby, Executive Director, the volume of service in that short period of time has increased to be comparable with similar centers in Salt Lake City, Ogden and Logan. There has been an average of five children a day in the center. Parents who are having problems and feel they have been or may become abusive with their children may leave their children at the center overnight or for the maximum of 72 hours, while parents receive counseling, advice or just talk to someone, focus on what can be done, and get a new prospective on their problems. Roby says that the program is run on a voluntary basis - parents refer themselves without any other intervention and there is no stigma attached. The center responds not only to abuse, but neglect, medical emergencies, housing problems, or any reason that precludes adequate parenting in the home. "We depend heavily on a it is an integral volunteer force part of the program. The Cup, now in its fourth year, is expected to attract over 2,000 participants ages 2 and up. As in previous years, the competition will travel to a different ski resort each Saturday throughout the winter. This year, 10 Utah ski resorts are participating in the event, with the first race scheduled for Jan. 5 at Deer Valley. First place winners from each resort will be invited to compete in the Championship Race. March 23 at Snowbird. Other races will be held at Alta (Jan. 12), Snowbird (Jan. 19), Nordic Valley (Jan. 26), Park City (Feb. 2), Brianhead (Feb. 9), Beaver Mountain (Feb. 23), Brighton (March 2), Powder Mountain (March 9) and Sundance (March 16). All volunteers are trained and led by professionals. There are permanent, paid house parents who keep up the house, cook the meals and so on, but volunteers are needed to care for the children such as dress, bathe, read, conduct activities and so on from 9 a.m. to 9 shifts, p.m. everyday in three-hou- r at least one shift a week. There is some flexibility as to hours and days worked. Volunteers are required to be at least 18 years old, have no criminal record, and have their own transportation.
