Show Messiah performed Handel's "The Messiah" will be performed Dec. 8 and 9 by the Alpine Area Chamber Music Society, under the direction of Leon V. Honey. Saturdays performance is at Pleasant Grove High School Auditorium and the Sunday presentation at the Tabernacle in American Fork. Both performances begin at 7:30 p.m. The public is invited. Admission is free. Soloists include Linda D. Phillips, Soprano; Nancy Ekins, Alto; Harold Jay Madsen, Tenor; and William E. (Bill) Petersen, bass. Christmas The is program sponsored by the Utah Pageant of the Arts. Betty N. Brady, chairman of the board of trustees of the Pageant, in announcing the presentation of "The Messiah" said the Utah Pageant of the Arts is proud to announce the affiliation of the Alpine Area Chamber Music Society as an addition to the Pageant Expansion Arts Program. She said the objective of the Pageant remains the same as when it was organized in August of 1972 "sustain, foster and encourage all facets of the arts. "We look forward to a long and association with productive theAlpine Area Chamber Music Society, with the possibility that this might one day be the nucleus of a Pageant sponsored symphony orchestra," she said. Mrs. Brady says Mr. Honey brings a with him a rich musical background in both performing and conducting. Currently instructor of instrumental music at Pleasant Grove High School (a post he has held for the last six years), he has performed professionally in such groups as the Albuquerque Civic Symphony, the Phoenix Symphony, Taliesen West and many others. In addition, he has led many choirs during this time and has written several compositions for choir. This is his fourth season as musical director of the Alpine Area Chamber Music Society. He holds Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from Arizona State Uniyersity; and has done graduate work at Pepperdine Long Beach State University, University and Brigham Young University. He is a, member of the Utah Valley Symphony Orchestra and has also been a member of the Provo Municipal Band under the direction of Ralph Laycock. The Chamber Society consists of orchestra members and also features three additional groups -the Brass quintet, the Woodwind ensemble and the Oratorio Choir More than 50 singers will participate in "The Messiah" choir. Society members rehearse at the Pageant Center, 454 North Center in American Fork, where their first concert of the season was presented this fall. Linda D. Phillips, soprano soloist, was born in Chicago and attended parochial schools in the suburbs. She attended Elmhurst College until she met her husband, who was then a member of the U.S. Navy "Blue Jacket Choir." She studied with Viola the Repp and became youngsters member of the Chicago Lyric Opera when she was 19. Now the mother of eight children, she still finds time to be active in music as conductor of the choir in her LDS Ward, as Relief Society chorister and as a frequent soloist. She first sang "The Messiah" when she was 13 years old performing with the Elmhurst Community Choir. This season marks her 21st year of performing this work. Nancy Higginson Ekins, contralto soloist, first learned "The Messiah" at Jordan High School during her junior year. The next year her teacher, J.C. Crapo, asked her to sing the contralto solos. She has since had the privilege of sharing her talent in presenting these beautiful songs many times. This is her fourth performance with the Chamber Music Society. Born in Kentucky and raised in Idaho, she has spent her married years in Utah. She and her husband, Alton, lived briefly in American in Pleasant Grove-ManilFork, and moved to Lake Shore in 1978. She is a busy mother as the Ekins are parents of nine children, all living at home with the exception of a son serving a mission for his church. Mrs. Ekins is currently singing in a double trio, in addition to soloing for many chivic and church occasions. Harold Jay Madsen, tenor soloist for "The Messiah", was born in Provo and attended public schools in this area. His family spent time overseas, returing to Utah Valley in time for him to attend and graduate from Orem High School While in high school he was a member of the A Cappella Choir, the Chamber Choir, and also served as He has studentbody 38 rs . studied with Olga Gardner of Brigham Young University and has been a member of the A Cappella Choir there. He is currently attending BYU, where he is majoring in engineering. Bass Soloist William E. Petersen is well known in the area for his musical talents, having served as president and member of the Utah Valley Opera Association, as a board member of the Central Utah Arts Council, and as a member of the music committee of the Utah County Fair Association. Currently employed by the Utah State Employees Credit Union, he was born and reared in Idaho. He is a graduate of the Pacific Coast Banking School of the University of Washington. He has been active in community affairs for many years, having served as a member of invarious civic organizations, Grove the Pleasant City cluding Council, Pleasant Grove Chamber of Commerce, the United Way and the Kiwanis. The Alpine Area Chamber Music Society had its beginnings in a Chamber Orchestra organized by Owen Bingham five years ago. Mr. Honey was asked to direct the final concert of the orchestra upon the death of Mr. Bingham. The Society was established at that concert, with charter members deining three major goals: First, to provide performance opportunities for adults in the north Utah Valley community; second, to establish and maintain a library of music for use by members as well as appropriate housing for such a collection; and third, to create a collection of instruments for use by members of the society. A board of directors was chosen and a concert series established. Members said the Society is indebted to Mrs. Nona Bingham, who widowof Owen Bingham, contributed Mr. Bingham's fine collection of orchestra music to the group after his death.
