Show Free Press - Wednesday, December 5, 1984 - Page 10 Pioneers beat Grantsville, Tooele!!! Tooele seemed content to let the Lehi High School varsity Lehi quint run time off the clock basketball is starting out right where they left off last year when without fouling, but finally, in desperation, grabbed Calton. The tall sophomore missed the first of a two-shfoul, but dropped the 2 lead. Tooele second for a answered with a tip to move within one at 44. Smith then made a off the stall, putting driving lay-uthe Pioneers ahead by three. Again the Buffs countered at 1:28. With a one-poimargin, Lehi continued to hold the ball, and Smith was fouled with 27 seconds showing. He hit the first of two and left the door open for Tooele. Their shot rimmed out and Price was fouled on the rebound at :07. He calmly sank both the free throws to give the Pioneers the four-poiedge. Both Tooele and Lehi started slow with Tooele getting the lead at 4 to start the second quarter. Lehi then took over and held the Buffs just out of reach at 9 at half, then let up edge at the final slightly for a quarter break and won by four. Both teams had nineteen field goals, but Lehi was more effective from the charity stripe with 12 of 15. Tooele had only 8 of 17. Lehi played at Orem last night and will travel to Timp View for contests on Friday. Sophomores play at 3:30, followed by the junior varsity at 5:30 and the varsity at 7:30. After two games Lott is averaging 19.5 with 14 field goals and 11 of 16 free throws. Glathar is right on his heels with 32 points, a 16 point average on 13 field goals and 6 of 7 free throws. Behind the leaders are Smith with a 10 point average; Calton, 6; Gordon Turner, 6; Ian Palmer, 4; and Trevor Powell, 2.5. The Pioneers are shooting 46 percent from the field and 65 percent from the line. they finished a good season with some outstanding juniors. Those juniors have now grown up and are dedicated seniors, intent on making Coach Ken Robinson's first year at the Pioneer school a memorable one. Friday and Saturday nights the Pioneers slipped past two Tooele County schools with wins over and Tooele, Grantsville, in what most fans felt was a good representation of the basketball traditions that have become expected at Lehi. Playing without Kevin Southwick, inch center, the Pioneers 6 foot were led by Wade Lott and Greg Glathar on the two separate nights. Lott shown against the Cowboys, and Glathar added his share when the Buffaloes came to town. Each of them had ten field goals. Lott added seven of twelve free throws, while Glathar went three for three in the tight battle with Tooele. Southwick was sidelined by infection following a practice session injury. There was never a question about the outcome of the Friday contst as 3 Lehi jumped out to a first 11 at it lead, by quarter enlarged the half, led by 18 with 5:51 remaining in the third canto and 3 at the quarter, then coasted to the 7 final score. Against Tooele it was slightly different. The Buffs were bigger than the Pineers with only but sophomore Matt Calton over the balance and outstanding zone defense of the Pioneers proved too much for the visiting Tooeleans. If a hero needed to be selected in the Tooele game, it would probably be junior Chris Price who came off the bench in the late part of the game to give more skills to the Pioneers. Price, Bryan Smith and Glathar were the mainstays on Lehi's stall which started with 3:44 remaining in the contest and the Pioneers ahead by only two points. 45-4- p nt 50-4- 76-6- 5-- 5-- 23-1- 20-1- 56-4- 76-6- 6-- four-corn- i 39-3- 8 V I I I v v' Yr Glathar watches as Pioneers grab rebound.
