(Some of the group murmured, "Not more old things...," but that's what we came to see. We can see glass and chrome at home.) In 27 B.C., (Julius Caesar's adopted son) took the name of Augustus and became the first emporer. He introduced many reforms, and the resultant peace and prosperity won much admiration and respect from the people. Art and literature reached a high point. He boasted that he "found Rome a city of brick and left it a city of marble." Claudio explained that most say Rome is built on seven hills - but there are really more. The most famous are: Palatine Hill, where the earliest Romans lived, that is now almost covered with the ruins of ancient buildings - plus a modern public park. Most of the splendid palaces of the early wealthy Romans were built here. Quyirinal Hill, near the center of the modern city, is where we glimpsed the Presidential Palace and the chief public buildings, but Hill is the center of Capitoline both anciently and Roman life now. The Capitol Building, designed by Michelangelo to replace the ancient one, is there and 'many famous art museums. A perfectly preserved antique statue of Emperor Marcus Aurelius stands on the landing of the Capitol stairway. g, pasta-eatin- g Italian people. We admired (and sometimes bought) samples of their exquisite glass and lace, ivory carvings, marble and alabaster pieces, mosaics, leather goods and jewelry. In the galleries we admired the i, work of da Vinci, Raphael, Giorgione, Titian and TinTot-ticell- toretto -- - and, of course, Michelangelo. Italian painters were the first in modern times to achieve life-lik- e expressions and to portray movement in their work. We observed their emphasis on decorative designs and Christian religious subjects. We found that arts and crafts play an important part in the daily life of almost every Italian and their schools specializing in art and music are world famous. Now, as we approach Rome, I'm trying to remember other things . I've learned about Italy and its capital: Italy forms a sort of bridge across the center of the Mediterranean Sea from Europe almost to Africa. It's about the size of Georgia and Florida, and (with stretch in the imagination) is similar in shape. No place in the ; "leg" of the boot is more than 65 I miles from the sea.The Alps en-- f circle the peninsula on the north. Italy has lots of earthquakes "Mmore than any other country except Japan) and three active .. volcanoes. In 79 A.D., Mt. Vesuvius buried Pompeii and Herculaneum. I 'm eager to learn more. (Next day) - We saw the Diocletian Baths as we passed on our way to the Forum. Today we saw fascinating scenes in Rome - center of the Roman Empire in the time of Christ, now capital of Italy and one of the great cities of the modern world. Antiquity and technology posh apartments are built above preserved ruins. t; Ancient Rome had many elaborate public baths, called thermae. These huge establishments often included pools and hot and cold baths, gymnasiums, art galleries and libraries. Luxurious public baths, built at great expense and with elaborate decorations, were one of the most famous characteristics of ancient Rome. Bathing was one o' their contributions to dusty ancient civilization. (We saw an elaborate bathing arrangement at Masada -originally a Roman military outpost.) When we reached the ruins of the ancient Roman Forum, around which the chief monuments and public buildings of the early empire were centered, we all piled out of the bus and clustered around. Although all we could see was a couple of old buildings and the ruins of many others (some overgrown with vegetation) on a large flat place on the top of the hill, he explained that here was the political and social center of the ancient city. Here the chief monuments (including temples of their gods) and public buildings (including the Senate for debates on matters of public concern) were located. The small temple of Vesta, goddess of fire and the home, was at the eastern end; the Tabularium (records office), at the western. In the early days most of the streets were narrow and crooked, the homes had no central heating or TV's, and the people came here to worship, conduct their business affairs and visit. Later, the Forum was reserved for legal and public affairs, and the shops moved to new places. took pride in ornamenting with elaborate buildings, arches and statuary. Em-ppre- the most important buildings was the Basilica, a large oblong hall where ancient Roman magistrates heard pleas for justice and gave decisions. These courtrooms were common throughout the Roman world at the beginning of the Christian Era. The length was about three times the width, with the entrance at one end and a sort of called an apse, at the other. In the apse was the platform on which the judges sat. Inside, the roof was supported by One of half-circl- two rows of pillars, dividing the main floor into three aisles: the central aisle, the nave; and a narrower one on each side. These public courts, called basilicas, often served as Christian churches in later years and became the model for church architecture in all parts of the world. Claudio helped us imagine what an impressive sight the Forum must have been with pillared temples, gleaming columns, and shaded walks. But he explained that it was not the architecture that made Rome the wonder of the ancient world, but the teeming life that flowed through it. People from all parts of the empire mingled in the markets, the Forum, and the baths. "Just imagine," he said, "stately Romans in flowing togas, the echo of clashing arms as soldiers march through the walls after military victories, and the conquered enemy of royal rank being led captive under the stately arches.... Imagine Cicero delivering a speech in the Senate and Mark Antony moving the people to vengeance and violence." Much of this history and many decisions that had effects originated on this plot of ground. The barbarians did not destroy the Forum when they overthrew the city in the 400's, but by the Middle Ages the square was little more than a desolate waste; the buildings had tumbled into ruins or were buried by rubbish. A lot of the material was carried off for use in fortifications or construction of new buildings, and at one time cattle were assembled here. During the 18th century, excavations brought many sadly damaged artistic treasures to light. different structures Twenty-tw- o were unearthed and identified. I want to tell you more about the prison and the Temple of Vesta -next time. -- Virginia Swenson FHP to open new medical center in Utah County The contracts have been signed and the builders have begun the necessary remodeling work in FHP's new Village Green Medical Center in Utah County.
