The program is part of a district-wid- e project which allows retired individuals to serve as aides or tutors in school classrooms on an intermittent basis and in a variety of subject areas. Formally, the project is a United Way program headquartered with Utah County. Titled "Retired Senior Volunteer Program" (RSVP), the organization involves hundreds of senior volunteers in numerous service projects. According to RSVP Director, David L. Gardner, Alpine District is one of many agencies which uses the skills and experience of retired citizens. I Sharon Smith, coordinator of RSVP for the district, says that some 30 individuals are now serving in various .capacities in local schools. "We have reading tutors, I math ac music specialists, companists, and other classroom aides in the program," said Smith. "Most of our people have no formal specialties;; they are simply people who enjoy children and who want to spend their time in a worthwhile activity. In fact, those are the only two requirements for participation in the program: an interest in children and a little bit of spare time." Individuals who become RSVP volunteers can spend as much or as little time as they wish in the schools. While they do not receive pay for their service, they are provided with a free lunch on the days they work in the schools. And, where necessary, a mileage stipend is furnished. Most of the volunteers, however, serve in a school close to their home. There are still a number of openings in the district for senior volunteers.'
