Cutting horses were put through their paces in the spacious confines of Peck's Arena, a 300 by 100 foot facility located in Southeast Lehi. Cutting horse competition is growing faster than horse racing, according to Utah veterinarian and cattle inspector, Robert L. Poulsen. Poulsen served as announcer as natural cow sense, Poulsen ex- scorekeeper. A plained. "The idea is for the horse to go deep into a herd, cut a cow out and keep it from going back into the herd." Judges are asked to determine just how good the cutter holds the cow. The number of cattle in the arena at one time depends on the number of cutters entered in that event. Bleachers were full of interested spectators who were rooting for their favorite horse-ridcombination. Cattle are rented from ranchers all over the valley. Ken Webb, local cattleman, arranged for the event to be held at Mill Pond Ranch; he also rented the collection' of Charolais, Hereford and other breeds of cattle needed for the competition. Poulsen pointed to a horse that he reckoned to be about 20 years old. His owner stated that "Webb's er Treasure" was the oldest horse entered in the futurity. "A 20 year old horse would be considered very old. When a horse gets nine years old, you're usually tradinV Poulsen said. Darrel Schow, a competitor from Sandy, who is employed in Salt Lake City, said that his cutting horse is his hobby. Plenty of good food was furnished by the 13th LDS Ward and terms like "hot quit" mingled with food terms like "hot dog,"the crowd milled around the arena hoping the event can be held in Lehi again next "I started training my horse about a year ago. He won't be really good until he's had about four more years of training," Schow explained, as he paid the entry fee and filled out registration forms. A good cutting horse is worth anywhere from $10,000 to hundreds of thousands of dollars, according to Poulsen. year. The futurity started at 8 a.m. Friday and Saturday morning and continued until late Saturday night. One of the ways is to go to the temple, increase our own temple work and diligently seek to do the will of our Heavenly Father." Pres. Glade Dalton told of an experience in the Church Visitors Center when a tourist from Florida asked the meaning of all the beehives he'd seen. The guide explained that it meant industry. "We all have talents and we need to use them," Pres. Dalton said. "We should teach our children to do for themselves and to do something for someone without expecting rewards or praise." Service in church, community and family was emphasized by Mayor George Tripp. He said that we should discipline ourselves to pay tithing and perform service to our fellowman cheerfully. "Be concerned with people outside the church as well as in it," he urged the audience. Mayor Tripp quoted his friend Ken Webb, "Most people go through life with 100 acres of opportunities and only ten percent under cultivation." He concluded his message saying, "The Lord will make us equal to our callings if we try. If there is a will, After beautiful prelude music by a combined choir, President Alvin Schow welcomed the capacity crowd attending Lehi Stake Conference Sunday. Regional Representative Bill J. Pope presided. President Schow expressed gratitude to Haws Floral for the flower arrangements and thanked the First Ward High Priests for serving as ushers. The conference theme, "Perfecting of the Saints Through and Service," was introduced by President Schow. He spoke of the need for spiritual and expressed thanks for the church and a God who is unchangeable. The Articles of Faith are as appropriate today as they day Joseph Smith wrote them. We are not dealing with a changing spiritual existence and when you work toward it, you're working on firm ground," Schow explained. He continued his message saving, "If eternal life is our goal then I pray that we may live as our Heavenly Father lives. Perfection is possible." In conclusion, Pres. Schow said, "The Lord wants us to be humble, self-relian- there is a way." Three youth speakers, Maria Nielsen, Greg Glathar and a missionary, Elder Moore, bore their testimonies, expressing their love for their families and the church. The concluding message was given by Elder Pope. He stated that the Sons of Helaman and Moroni were role models for the youth of today. "They had been taught to keep the commandements of God and stand uprightly before Him," Elder Pope continued, saying, "Satan is out there. He's real, he's active, he's ready to sift you as wheat." Urging young people to talk to their parents and to get on their knees when important decisions are to be made. Elder Pope said, "If you can't go to your parents or get on your knees - just forget about it. Satan is not given the power to tempt you beyond your power to hear it." Rulings (as set down recently) by the International Trade Commission are insufficient, President Reagan was told, as they "don't cover all products, and, here in the West, they open the door to an unlimited flood of subsidized, dumped foreign slabs. When you rule on their (the ITC) recommendations, will you remedy that situation," the letter concluded. Washington. Rep. Nielson, meeting with the group just prior to enplaning for Washington D.C., also took with him a letter from Coalition Members to President Ronald Reagan and was to present this to the President Tuesday morning of this week.
