Study probes jr. high alternatives By MARC HADDOCK what committee Tackling chairmen call a "very emotional Fork subject," the Alternative Housing Committee turned in a report to the Alpine School District. The report outlines 12 alternatives to a proposal by Superintendent Clark Cox to send part of the junior high school students in Highland to a new school proposed for the Cedar Hollow area in Lehi. The report was prepared at Dr. Cox'i request after Highland residents raised strong objections to Lehi-Americ- the proposal to split the Highland community between schools. Residents of Lehi, Highland, Alpine and American Fork served on the committee to review the alternatives available to the district in view of a growing student population and inadequate facilities in the present Lehi Jr. High School. The school board is expected to make a decision on the size and location of a new junior high school to replace the old Lehi school at its May 8 business meeting in American Fork. The school Is expected to take about three years to be completed. Alternatives considered by the committee covered a broad range of possibilities, from joint financing of Highland-Alpin- e school to split sessions to a consolidated high school in American Fork for all high school students In the four communities. In summing up the findings, Donald committee chairmen LeBaron and Howard Johnson noted that the issues were emotional, and said "it is difficult to separate emotions from data. Any decision cannot ignore these emotions," they went on to say. "People have an identity and should have a right, if possible to maintain it." Johnson and LeBaron also take issue with a saturation study prepared for the district. Information from the study was taken Into account in deciding where to place the new school. But LeBaron and Johnson point out that the study "has missed the boat for the Fork Lehi-Americ- area. "We know there will be growth in this area, but the study not only does not address this growth, it loses students who are now in the system," the chairmen write. "The future building in this area cannot be planned on such information." Johnson and LeBaron also say that studies show between 3,200 and 4,000 junior high students in the Fork area by the beginning of the next decade. "This means three full junior high schools in the area and that time is critical," the letter says. "We believe that as soon as the Lehi building is completed it will be necessary to begin another to relieve the American Fork Junior High School." Lehi-Americ- mercials, music videos and television shows. Cindy was the solo vocalist with the Utah Valley Symphony. Chad Murdoch Chad graduated from BYU where he majored in Theater Cinematic Arts & Directing. He toured Europe with the USO Production of "Fiddler on the Roof." He has traveled to China twice for professional television specials with the Nightstar Production Company. Chad is currently producing a syn"Homeshow National," dicated television show. He is also working with CBS on music videos. The letter also recommends that the school district resolve "the questions of Middle School-Junio- r High School . . . so that the buildings will be appropriate for their use." The middle school concept is just one of the alternatives studied and reported on by individual committee members. LeBaron presented the report on the middle school alternative --an alternative he says "would provide a more permanent solution than a transfer of American Fork Junior. High School students to Lehi."
