He attended his 1983 school year in Bendigo, as Australia, a participant in a Rotary Club International Student Exchange Program. "I learned to appreciate my parents for sending me, my grandma for being so faithful in writing to me and my friends who wrote to me, and I'd like to go back some day," Garret said. His 12 month visit included six weeks off for Christmas, two weeks between terms and six weeks for summer vacation. He lived with six families, two months in each home. "School is different there. There are no extra auricular activities. They consider school a place to learn. It's all academics. It's like a college schedule," Garret said. He explained that the schedule is harder than school here, "they weeks cover all academic aspects of education very well, but socially, no. "They don't prepare you for social acceptance in the world," he Public Notice Advertising Protects Your Right to Know Aessie aim said. After students receive a high school certificate they take a test and that test determines whether they are qualified to go to university. "You don't have to pay much to go to university if you qualify," Garret stated. About the only two ways you could get a good job down there would be to continue your education at univesity, or if you dropped out of high school, got an ' apprenticeship and worked your way up, according to the Lehi student His educational goals have solidified since his exchange trip. He will attend Utah State University and will probably major Chicken franchises in Australia and if the exchange student got homesick he could find one of these good old American fast food outlets and satisfy his homesickness in a big hurry. "They wear jeans and trshirts, just like us. The clothing isn't that much different In the winter they wear heavy woolen sweaters and that is one of my regrets: that I didn't buy some sweaters to bring home. You can get them for six or seven dollars there. They'd cost 50 here," Carson mused. people according to Carson. They love to watch cricket games on TV. (Sometimes seven hours worth!) they like Australian football, which is a cross between rugby and soccer, and they're swimming enthusiasts. ' They also like tennis. a for is headed Australia socialistic state. Garret said. "People don't concern themselves about politics. The government controls just about everything One time, strikes. Everyone because of a strike, we had to wait two hours at the airport just to get. the plane sprayed. Unions are strong there and labor unions are big business." Young people there are about the same as young people anywhere, Carson explained. "There's a lot of peer pressure as far as acceptance goes, especially with the girls." In Garret's humble opinion, food there isn't that much different 'The ladies are good cooks. The women mostly stay home, clean and cook. The dad is definitely the head of the house," he said. Pizza have Huts; They McDonalds and Kentucky Pried in dentistry. Garret also said that students are more restricted there They can't drive until 18 years of age 'They go home after school and do homework. It's a big deal to go out on weekends to a disco. They watch TV a lot and the average Australian is pretty narrowminded about politics." Australians are sportsminded ir fVW ' o ( PH Iff! The Rotary Club paid $10.00 a week for the year's study, according to Carson, and his family paid for the airfare and all other expenses. "It was a valuable experience for me. It made me take a look at myself and decide what I wanted to do in life. You're away from family and friends and you find out what you're made of," Carson said when asked if he'd recommend the exchange for someone else. "It was a valuable time in my life. I'd definitely recommend it for others," Garrets concluded.
