Show 7 Free Press - Wednesday, April 4, 1884 - Page 2 (BcnmmcBmit A Girl Scouts need support By BETTY FOWLER If Gary Hart was called in to be interviewed by senior citizens concerned about his "new kid on the Mock1" campaign rhetoric, the something inside a box of cookies that might hurt somebody else, although it certainly gets a lot of attention. . But the recent incidents of tampering with Girl Scout Cookies could do a lot of damage to a deserving program, and that's too bad. Especially since the incidents of tampering with the cookies have been vastly overstated. Throughout the nation, evidence of tampering has been found in fewer than 20 boxes of cookies in seven Girl Scout councils. But the incident carries a high fear factor especially since the notorious Tylenol poisonings of a few years ago which dominated headlines for days and created an atmosphere of fear that pervaded the nation. The finding of pins and razor blades in boxes of Girl Scout Cookies brings back those same fears. So much so that Paul Harvey, speaking a nationwide broadcast, called for a halt to the sale of the cookies until the mysterious cases of tampering could be resolved. But the differences between the two events are vast. No one has been, or is likely to be harmed through the cookies, since the evidences of tampering have been visible and detected early. And the Girl Scouts of the USA have refused to overreact to the tampering cases. They can't afford to. The sale of the cookies represents over half of the program's annual income. With the sale of the cookies, many Girl Scouts might be denied the chance to go to summer camp or to have trained leaders programs funded by the cookie sales. While this controversy has been distant, it comes home this week when Girl Scouts throughout Utah will start filling orders made months ago. And while those orders were placed with the bakery after the cases of tampering were uncovered and any further incidents are unlikely, Utah Girl Scout officials are operating with the utmost caution. Cookie deliveries will be monitored throughout the state for any evidences of tampering. And customers and parents of the Girl Scouts are asked to inspect cookie packages for evidence of tampering. Any suspicious packages should be taken to the Orem Girl Scout Service Center or to local law enforcement officials. The bottom line is, many Girl Scouts will be knocking on doors to fill the orders they received earlier that's one of their contributions to their program. Because of the extraordinary measures taken by the local council to ensure the safety of their product, local residents should accept those orders, inspect them and then enjoy them. - - - 3 Democratic nomination you're drugstore.
