Show AAf ft 9 ' MUJ A &w State Looks At Training School A team of State Health Department aurveyora are in the midat of a inspection at the Utah State Training School and say they are confident the institution three-wee- k will be able to meet funding criteria -- with completion of planned changes. "Instead of asking for a waiver pending completion of (planned) building programs, we are now writing plans for correction for any beds not currently certified," Leonard W. La vis, Superintendent of the School, said at a meeting of friends of the school. The training school stands to lose $7 million in program money from federal funding if the necessary beds aren't certified for Title 19 funds by July 18. Also of concern is the possibility of losing $2 million in state money allocated for Phase IV of the schools building program. Mr. Levis said the Iris, Lily and Cedar complex, all multi-storie- d buildings used for residences, are the principal concern. Although they will not qualify for certification as they are now, it is believed with changes they will meet the needs at the present time. "These will be used on a temporary basis until new residences and facilities can be built," the Superintendent said. "With the changes we propose, the survey team is confident we can retain our federal Medicaid funds," he said. Approximately $18 million in federal and State Medicaid funds are paid annually for operations at the training school. Mr. Lav is said resident occupancy of the three buildings are being lowered to 32 residents in each instead of the current 50 residents ; partitions added to separate the dormitories into smaller bedrooms of s each - unless circumstances indicate better care can be given by use of larger areas; and any residents moved to four-bed- Hypertension Clinic Set For Senior Citizens lit her buildings. The buildings have already complete fire sprinkling systems on each floor and outside fire escape lowers, he noted. The escape towers are available from each bedroom area Life and safety experts are from I and from the State Fire Marshall's office have approved the plans from this standpoint. Cost of the remodeling is estimated at aUmt $40.(HKi. Mr. I avis said this will lie taken from current training school funds and he included in next years' budget for reimbursement . Mr livis said the remodeling, if approved, will bring alxtut the extension of time needed to complete planned building phases and bring the school into compliance with Section 504 of the Kehabilita-tioAct of 197:1. required of all facilities receiving Title 19 funding. Once I'hase Four of the building program is approved and new residential housing completed. Iris, Lily and Cedar will lie vacated as residential halls, and may be lorn down, depending upon needs of the school at the time. Mr. Iavis explained in order to 19 Title receive the funding, National American Standards Institute (ANSI) code has to be met. This code provides buildings constructed prior to June 3, 1977, in may conduct a order to test the accessibility of its program and physical plant to individuals. This handicapped evaluation is now being completed. Although the three multi-storie- d buildings in question are not accessible to all handicaped, they can be used by ambulatory residents, he said. Nearly all of the other buildings on campus are accessible and can be used by the handicapped in both programming and residential needs. Mr. Lavis said accessibility means now only for residents of the school but also for visitors and employees who are handicapped. Want It Picked Up? Box it! "The general public will have to be the eyes and ears of the Forest." Forest officials encourage Forest users to enjoy the Forest but to refrain from destroying Forest non-use- iu. II I A Vandalism Is Rising In Uinta Forest Vandalism is a growing concern among Uinta National Forest officials. Destroying and stealing of Forest Service property costs the r, and abuser of the user, Forest thousands of dollars each year. According to District Ranger Harry Opfar, burning benches, stealing campfire grills, shooting at toilets, and destroying and stealing of signs and bulletin boards cost $5,000 to $6,000 on the Pleasant Grove Ranger District alone. Recently, a trail counter and a double-face- d bulletin board were stolen, fee boxes were broken into, and a wooden bench was used for firewood. Spanish Fork District Ranger Ronald Lisonbee said vandals took flasher barricades from the Nebo Loop Road in Payson Canyon; toilets, washbasins, and mirrors from Blackhawk Campground were stolen; and numerous directional signs have been completely or partially destroyed. o j lb. pkg $1.33 Chuck Steak $1.29 ib. |
