Children up to their fifth birthday - physical age may be on the program if qualifications are met. "We have had people inquire whether their mentally retarded or physically handicapped child who is over five but has the mentality lower than that or otherwise meet qualifications can qualify and we have to tell them no," she said. Those who do qualify are give a "perscription" saying which food they are eligible to buy and the amount. Kach food voucher is for a certain period of time and can be turned in for items checked off at WIC headquarters. Speaking of the reluctance of Utah County Commissioners to accept the program (she has been fighting for the program here for the past two years.) Mrs. Wharton said the number of people now qualifying for it proves it has been needed all along even though the commissioners didn't - and still don't agree. "We proved time and time again there was a crying need for the program," she said. "It is a disgrace the program hasn't been here sooner." The argument of the commissioners is they feel it duplicates others such as food stamps and that qualifications are too loose. Ms. Brooks said WIC clinics are held at 420 North 200 West in Provo. Individuals who wish to apply for the WIC program should make an appointment by telephoning mime and Children, teens and adults now have the Funeral Services M36' or? - qualify.
