When his parents gave him a pacifier, he shot it through a hole in t he crib, I hey bought him a teddy bear and he tried to dribble it. Then the seasons changed and all concerned were relieved to find that Mark no longer played basketball with his toys - until he started Ihrowing curves off the walls with his building blocks. Mark soon learned to walk. Within days, he used this to his advantage as he dropped back and fired his bottle off Dad's favorite armchair. I guess sports was in his blood. With all that talent running through his veins, Mark entered the "Shoot for the Stars" tournament at age 12. It was sponsored by the Utah Stars of the olds ABA as a contest for all age groups testing shooting ability and dribbling skills. The participants were asked to dribble a basketball through a course, shoot from various spots on the court within a time limit After wiping the and sink floor with the local talent, Mark quickly moved on to Salt Lake, where the finals were held. Before the night was through at the Salt Palace, Mark had won himself a trip lo Denver with Moses Malone and company to watch the Stars play, season tickets to all home games and a total of about $1,200 in prizes. Luckily, the season tickets weren't slocks - the Stars went busied the next year and Mark is still wailing to see the first game. The next step in Mark's basketball career was high school. And you thought there was nothing left for an encore. In leading his learn lo the stale championships, Mark won Ihe tourney MVP, averaging 25 points a game over the "season! For" his heroics, Mark was invited lo Iryout for the Cerebral Palsey State All-Stteam. Twenty players were invited from the Salt Lake area that comprised the metro learn and 10 from all other parts of the state that made up Ihe state team.
