Show The Ielii Free Press - Thursday. April 2, 1981 - Page and M By Donna Barnes Where can you find me n Saturday afternoon after my work's done, the Vacuum Sunday preparations completed, and my babies down for their nap? At the University Mall? Nope. At the Saturday matinee at the Towne Cimena? Nope. Watching the NCAA basketball playoffs? Wrong again. You will find me relaxing in the material department, or browsing through a pall u" n book or down in the furniture room at Broadbent's. Broadbents has been a habit with me for more lhan J5 years and il has been for many for nearly one hundred years. While many retail businesses have come and gone, Broadbents is carrying on a family tradition that began in 1859 when John, the present proprietor's grandfather, Joseph, settled in Utah after a difficult handcart journey from New York. After a few days of rest in Salt Lake City, the Broadbents moved to Lehi in where ihey lived in a dug-ou- t almost primiiive conditions until i hey purchased a small adobe house on the land where Broadbents si ore stands today. Mrs. Broadbeni, being very industrious and frugal, as women had lo be, would purchase bolls of blue denim which she made inio overalls and jumpers. Mr. Broadbeni put in i he copper rivets which had become a e trademark of clothing. In 1882, upon l he suggestion of Mrs. Broadbeni, a small store was buill onto their home in which she could sell her home-sew- n clothing. The business thrived and in laier years, additional buildings were added and finally the firm of Broadbent and Son became one of t he leading mercani ile inst itul ions of t he valley. The story is told thai in the early days of the store Joseph would walk to Salt Lake City lo Dinwoody Furniture Manufacturing Company and would load as many as three chairs on his back and walk to Lehi where he would sell the chairs in ihe store. This kind of dedication to retail business has been a trademark of Broadbeni s to this day. Grocery items were included in I lie merchandise. Tlte store carried the first sack of sugar bought in Uhi. (The sugar was the first made at the Ix'hi Sugar Factory.) Sarah, anxious to please her customers, began making hats. Tlie feathery, frilly delights became one of ihe mosl popular ileitis Broadhenis carried. Mrs. Broadbents skill with i he needle was endless as many ladies of Lehi will verify. Broadbents also opened a photography shop located on the second floor of the store. An enclosed flight of stairs was built on the outside of ihe building io accomodate those who warned i heir pictures laken. Pictures taken at the store could also be framed by a memler of the Broadbeni family. Upon the death of Joseph Sr., Joseph S. along with John, his son, continued the business. John became his father's righi hand. He remembers running home from school during lunch to make deliveries for the store. In fact. John comments, "gradua: ion was a nice gesture," because he was absent so much during his school years. Joseph S. was an ambitious and, as has been stated, a valiant worker. He was an active church member. He also served as general chairman of the Lehi Old Folks Committee for eleven years. He was a city council member for 14 years and mayor of Lehi for six consecutive years. During his term as mayor, the Memorial Building and library were finished, many thousands of dollars of debis paid off and lights installed on Main and State Streets. Ii is easy to see why Joseph depended on John so much during his life. He died February 4, 1937. John, logetlier with his wife, Alice Davis Broadbeni, continue in ihe g tradition of John's father and grandfather. Several innovations have been added io the store which reflect John and Alice's industry. John who has always loved music, added musical supplies lo the store's evergrowing merchandise. John also played saxaphone in the Silver Bandwagon Band and was a volunteer fireman for over 25 years. Alice, a creative, talented mother, persuaded John lo add art supplies. A fine selection of church books and genealogical supplies were also added. Together with the clothing, fabric, and furniture, Broadbents (John, Alice and their three children. Nan, Betty and David), have provided ihe people of Lehi with not only a place to buy almost anything imaginable, but a friendly retreat w here one can go lo relax and engage in friendly, con versa t ion.
