"Meals on Wheels" will be awarded to the lowest bidder, ARA Food Services Co., if they meet the qualifications. Oyer strong objections from about 225 senior citizens and aging program directors, Mountainlands Association of Governments, which includes county commissioners from Utah, Wasatch and Summit Counties, decided to accept the lower of two bids. One bid was submitted by Utah County itself for $2.12 per meal, while ARA bid $1 .98. "This decision was the most for the economical, county," said Commissioner Jerry Bradshaw, who seconded a motion by cost-effecti- Commissioner Kenneth Pinegar to accept the lower bidder. Many of the senior citizens in the meeting made comments concerning a possible boycott or litigation against the ARA contract. But Bradshaw predicted to The CitizenFree Press, "I don't think they will.',' And concerning possible legal action, he says there is simply no grounds for it. Roy Griffin, local site director, told the CitizenFree Press "AH of the site directors were opposed to putting the program out to bid because they feared the quality would drop. I've been up to Salt Lake and tried their meals up there, prepared by this same ARA, and they're just terrible. Site directors up there tell me participation has dropped to about half. The cost will be about the same, so it's not that. They just didn't have any reason. That's why we were so upset," Griffin continued. "It was just politics, I guess. The senior citizens all up and down the "It's county are upset about it." However, Griffin also doubted any boycott or litigation would result from the feud. "People talk. They get all. excited, but I don't think there would be any basis for legal action. They're receiving the meals practically free." Before the meeting started, an unidentified senior citizen said to the crowd, "It's cost us about $200 for gas to all get here tonight to try to correct a mistake the government's trying to make." Michael S. Water, regional sales director for ARA, said they provided food services for the Lake Placid Winter Olympics and, in Utah, serve Utah State Hospital, "Meals on Wheels" in Salt Lake City and Holy Cross Hospital. Defending ARA against accusations about poor service in Salt Lake City, Waters said, "If word were to get out our service was not good, it would hurt our reputation, so we are careful to always give good service." A.I. Tippetts, director of the senior citizen centers in Utah County, said he questioned the advisability of transferring the present program over to a commercial, private business. "It is not , using wisdom to do that." Glen Zimmerman, representing the senior citizens' viewpoint of maintaining the present system with the county instead of going with a private firm where they do not know for sure what type of service they will get, said, "There are two things in consideration and service.". In response to allegations of poor service and that meals are cold when they arrive, Waters cited some statistics compiled by Salt Lake County that 99 percent of those questioned said the drivers were friendly and 83 percent Introductory Offer from Klondike Jack's Pizza Company Single item Small Pizza FREE with purchase of Medium or Large Pizza Offer also good on Take Out (15 extra per box) Try Us - We Make A High Quality Pizza 11:30 10:00 p.m., till 11:00 Friday Valid thru April - Closed Sunday 5th COME IN AND SEE OUR BEAUTIFUL PIANOS Larsen's Music Box 24 E. Hansen for Congress. Senator Jones was joined by Neal Evans of Representative American Fork, as well as other legislators, in making the announcement. In endorsing Hansen, Jones and Evans placed themselves in opposition to two Utah County candidates for the congressional position. Mary Kessler of Highland and BYU debate coach Jed Richardson have also both announced their candidacy for the position. Senator Jones commented on his announcement. "Jim Hansen is the man who can win this November and represent the majority of Utah County voters in Congress. "I know him personally and have watched him lead the legislature. He is a man of conscientious attitude and outstanding judgement. He is in tune with the people of Utah," he said. The announcement was made from the legislative offices at the state capitol building. Senate President Cap Ferry of Box Elder County said' the "politics is not the issue. I have worked with both Jim Hansen and Gunn McKay in the state legislature. And in working with the two people, it is not hard for me to decide that Jim Hansen is the best man to represent the people of Utah in Congress." Ferry said that "Gunn McKay has shown that gradually he has come to the point where he is representing Washington and not Utah." has New Spring Colors OF Lehi r w in 30-Mon- Min.
