The setting: A two story frame house. The fire begins in the living room. An ashtray with cigarette butts still smoldering is dumped into a wastebasket next to the couch. On one side of the living room is the kitchen. The door is closed. On the other side of the living room is the dining room, the front hallway, and the stairway—the only direct exit from the second floor. Upstairs is the master bedroom, a guest room which is directly above the living room, and a child’s bedroom. Fire moves quickly. When firefighters arrive, they may not be able to rescue anyone left inside the house. Fire rolls across ceilings 7:3 Wastebasket is in flames. From First Flames (minutes and seconds): 0:30 First flames ignite the couch. 1:04 Fire spreads to area rug and smoke fills the room. 1:23 Stairway exit still clear. Fire continues to accelerate. 1:35 Smoke in living room builds until it finds openin s to rise through. Smoke an heat continue to rise throughout house, including up the stairway. Reaching stairs, flames quickly spread to upstairs. Less than five minutes from first flames to fully involved fire. Time between $0unding of smoke alarm—possibly the first warning of fire—and time when smoke blocks rapidly, begins to climb and off the upstairs hallway is only spread across ceiling. Room temperature is now 190°. ninety seconds. up stairway. 1:50 Smoke detector’s alarm sounds. 2:30 Above living room couch, temperature is now 400°. 2:48 Smoke pours into dining room. Smoke is about 4 feet off floor. Using stairway as escape route is now impossible. Temperature in living room is 500°. 3:20 Black, thick smoke fills upstairs hallway. Outside the home, fire is still not visible. Alternate escape route, through windows or onto roof, is only way out. 3:41 Intensity of fire ignites everything in living room. Temperature exceeds 1000°. Living room windows break.
