The huge structures you’ve probably seen rising out of the gravel pit down on the river road are just a few of the movie props to be helicoptered to the base of Castle Rock in late October. For those who missed companies will request use of the location. “Based on the analysis of potential environmental impacts contained in nearby? (this EA), I have determined that BLM permits in the future by telling them NOW how they feel about the kind of film activity that the BLM thinks is “of no significant impact” in this area. Even though this particular film may not have a large impact on us impacts are not expected to be significant.” (Signed by Brad Palmer, our BLM area manager.) Hey, what’s wrong with the Film Commission and BLM just letting a the article in last month’s CV Times, here are some direct quotes from the official BLM document allowing this movie on Castle Rock. “An ark would be constructed off couple of movie companies take a couple of pictures and provide some local jobs? Well, as we’ve seen (and heard) here in Castle Valley this past year, the impacts of filming are about as innocent as the impacts from site and transported in 6 to 8 pieces by helicopter. The ark would be approximately 20 feet wide by 60 feet long, and weigh 6-7,000 pounds. It would remain hidden behind the tunnel doors. The climactic ending to the movie . . . would be the crashing of the smoking ark from the edge of the cliff into the roadless area below. . . . The ark would be launched by a counterweight and pulley system . . . . A small unmanned pickup truck would pull a cable attached to the ark. The truck would continue off the cliff into the roadless area below and would be retrieved at "industrial" tourism to which the Travel Council has subjected us. Neither of these heavy industries are as “clean” as their proponents claim them to be. And ifyou take the time to go to the Film Commission meetings, you will find the quantity of filming we have seen here the last few years is just the very beginning of the commercial filming industry they are working to bring about. the same time as the ark with a helicopter.” Of course, there’s really no reason why any of the Film Commission members should care about what happens to us who live out here—they “Impacts of the Proposed Action” “Disturbance to soil and vegetation, from the falling pieces of the ark and truck, are expected to create a swath of altered color and removed vegetation. This would be especially noticeable where rock ledges are removed. This change would be evident in the landscape and would exceed the checks, and so what about their effects on the land and the people living “Once this location is used for —Part Two damage they cause? They just want to get the job done and get their pay- live elsewhere and are not affected themselves. Nor is there any reason for them to care about the land; they get their money and their pound of flesh by getting the BLM to allow film companies freedom to do whatever they want. And is some film company from California going to care about the Though we were too late to change anything about this filming, Castle Valley residents can influence what (supposedly the helicopters are being routed up Professor Valley this time), the BLM has once again shown its arrogant disregard for the resource it is supposed to protect. If we who live here want to compete with the influence of film company dollars and perks for Film Commission members and their relatives, we are going to have to communicate our views in numbers significant enough to get their attention. In the future, BLM needs to hear from more Castle Valley residents— more than the same few of us they are used to dealing with. BLM needs to know that there are lots of people out here who care about what happens in our area and to our community. If they don’t begin hearing more from us, they will continue to treat us like the willing victims we have been in the past. —Jack Campbell Thank you CASTLE CANYON NURSERY 259-8274 ANYTIME Canyonlands are a] Llamas TREES ANN BENGE BUSHES M..‘ft‘,’%'3..'.”iissz FLOWERS ' (amassmit IRRIGATION / KATHRYN STOKES, for your kind contribution.
