When it becomes time for a Stake division we expect to be ready with adequate housing. Most gratifying, however, is the inspirational way our people have "put their shoulders to the wheel" for this project. The entire stake is working on a "share and share alike" basis and we are meeting our commitments on a timely basis. Certainly this is the gospel at work; a prime example of brotherhood! some Many other things happened in 1979 to make the gospel "fun" - in the purest sense. We list only a few. Traditionally two are groups honored - our older people and our high school age youth. Hundreds responded to each affair. We are thrilled to know the wisdom of age and the vigor of youth. There is great strength in our stake! "And a little child shall lead them." Eighteen children in the Eighth Ward were honored for their 100 percent attendance at Primary. We know there were many in our other wards who achieved similar goals. There were strange things happening in our stake for several months. But everyone who attended the film festival knew why. Imagination, special and resourcefulness initiative with were blended patience, cooperation and effort to some produce "spring The building and grounds were swarming with young and old from the Seventh, Twelfth and Fifteenth Wards. One girl was heard to say, "I'd never work this hard at home!" Our missionaries are serving from Norway and England to Australia and New Zealand, from Indonesia, Thailand and Japan to Belgium and France, in North and South' America. Our stake is contributing generously to the growth of the world wide church. The rodeo world heard from our stake - loud and clear! Jan Norris of the Cedar Valley Ward was named Utah County Fair and Rodeo Queen. Marty Smith of the Third Ward in the participated National High School Rodeo Finals in North Dakota. And, of course, Desiree Cooper of the Eleventh Ward was named Queen of the Lehi Roundup. Then, Des was named Miss Rodeo Utah and represented our state at the Miss Rodeo America Contest in housecleaning." remarkably professional films. All were rated "G." Who needs Hollywood! "Many hands make light hearts." This was the "West Side Story" when the three wards occupying the building on Third West decided to do VERE T. PETERSON These were some of the obvious "happenings" in our stake during the year. Less obvious, but equally or more important, were the increased individual and family awareness of so many of our stake members. They sense the need to follow counsel, especially in the six areas more of preparedness. were delighted, for example, to see more gardens this year than last. And, if you are an early riser, you can see quite a number of runners and joggers. But of course we are not satisfied, for we know we can do more. This is our hope, our prayer, our challenge - that each of us do better in 1980 to serve the Lord and keep His commandments and follow the counsel of His leaders than we have ever done before. We recognize our dependance upon the gift provided to mankind as we honor the celebration of that marvelous and humble birth of the babe Jesus, the Christ. The faith and devotion of all members is also recognized and appreciated. Much faith has been demonstrated during the past year in the stake, the wards and in the individual lives of members. In all activities of the church the members have been true and faithful to their responsibilities and callings. At the February conference, Elder Bernard P. Brockbank, representing the General Authorities of the Church, counseled leaders and members in keeping the commandments of the Lord and to be a light for others to follow. He encouraged missionary work and fellowshipping by members and challenged all to learn their duties and be faithful in filling all assignments. This was a fitting challenge to members for the year and much has been done in that accomplishment. During March the sisters of the Relief Society observed the 137th anniversary of their organization with a social and presentation "A Womans Place-- A Place of Honor." In April the annual Road Show presentations were held with the theme "Tunes Tell The Tale." Other social events were enjoyed in the Stake Cultural Balls, banquets and physical activities. Stake members participated in a pilot physical fitness program suggested by the church to encourage individual health and fitness. Of special interest was the June 28th Sunday "Empty parking lot day." Members were asked to leave cars at home to conserve energy. So other ways were used to get members to church meetings including bicycles, horses together with buggys and walking of course. The building program of the stake included the building at 480 East 300 completion of the multi-war- d North at a cost of $776,500.00. The building, presently used by the Fifth and Ninth Wards, was dedicated May 27, 1979 by Pres. Schow. A contract was also let for an addition of classrooms to the building at 200 South 200 West. This addition will provide for the needs of members in the First and Sixth Wards. Contractor was Eli Stahlie of Orem and the expense of the addition was $210,000.00. The old building on 100 North and 100 East was sold to the City of Lehi. This building served the Fifth Ward members for 51 years and it is expected to serve the city for many additional years. Other purchases during the year included a future building site in the West part of the stake and the acquisition of an 80 acre recreation site in the Uintah Mountains east of Heber, Utah. Plans are now being formulated for the use of these sites by members of the stake. The basement rooms of the Stake Center were designated and remodeled to provide facilities for the name extraction program of the church's genealogical department. The facility provides microfilm readers for use in identifying and providing the names and statistics from Spanish records filmed in Mexico for temple work. And so as this year brings to a close the accomplishments and progress of the 70's we all look forward to the challenges and opportunities of the 80's with faith and anticipation. Members are urged to set high goals and a performance of excellance that will merit a continuation of the blessings and the happiness of a faithful people. An ancient prophet has stated "Man is, that he might have joy." This joy and happiness is based on righteousness and the keeping of every commandment of the Lord. May we unit during the new year to bring joy and happiness to all members and friends is the prayer and desire of the Lehi Utah Stake. Again we wish all a very happy and prosperous holiday season and New Year. |
