Show Lawns Need Watering But What Is Enough? '.. Turf specialists say that the composition of a sturdy, green grass plant may be as much as 85 percent water, and most of the moisture taken from the soil by the plant daily is lost to' the air through transpiration. No wonder, then,; that your lawn can go into moisture-stres- s almost overnight. However, lawns can be over-wateras well as receiving too little moisture. Overwatering can leach valuable plant nutrients to soil depths below root level, especially on sandy ' soils. ' Ideally, your lawn would receive just enough moisture if a gentle rain deposited about one-ha- lf inch water every two, three or four days, depending on soil type, amount of sunshine and drying winds. Since frequency of natural rainfall is highly unlikely, supplemental watering is often needed, notes The Fertilizer Institute. If your lawn is sandy, water will inch of disappear rapidly. One-ha- lf water on sandy soils will penetrate to a six-indepth. Since most grass roots are located within this zone, application of more than this amount at one time is wasteful. On the other hand, water penetrates clay soils, very slowly. Excess water merely runs off. Little is gained, therefore, by applying more than one-ha- lf inch to clay soil. Clay soils, however, hold water longer than sandy soils and thus do not require watering as frequently as sandy soils. There are a variety of sprinkler The type of systems available. sprinkler is not as important, generally, as the proper use and care of the type you choose. As to hand watering or sprinkling w ith a hose . . it may be fun. but it is a poor way to apply needed moisture to the lawn. ' " 9 Thursday, April 26, 1979 Is An Extra Bedroom Underfoot? Because the basics are already there, finishing a basement can be a considerably less expensive home improvement than either expansion or a room addition. Should you decide to handle it as a do - it - yourself project, you can save even more money. there are children in the family, is converting the basement into a family room for entertainment and recreation. If the basement is dry and in fairly good shape, all you may need is wall paneling, a ceiling, some furniture and perhaps tile code to determine whether the furnace and water heater may require a special enclosure, and the basement itself. Make sure it's dry. Inspect it after a steady rainfall. One idea you might consider, especially if available for the project. The walls may need furring strips to accommodate the wall paneling. Once the paneling is installed, consider cabinets along a wall for storage space. They can be frame with 2x2 fir or pine.
