The Pioneers and Vikings hampered by the wind, played a hard hitting and rough contest last Wednesday. P.G. took the wind in the first quarter and kicked off to Lehi. Ellison ran the ball back to the 25 yard line with Lehi going into the face of a strong wind. Kevin Colledge carried twice and Raymond Jones once, for a Lehi first down. Jones playing his first game as a varsity starter played an exceptionally good game as he gained a solid 58 yards against a strong Pleasant Grove team. Lehi moved to midfield before a gamble gave the Vikings the ball. They promptly fumbled as Bone picked up the errant ball. Kunz. Kopinski, Brown, Gurney and Green controlled the defensive line well for the Pioneers in the first quarter. The first period ended with the score knotted at 0. The second quarter the Vikings moved the ball well on the option as they powered down field and scored. PAT was no good and Pleasant Grove led 64 at that point. The second quarter from then on looked to be a stand off until the final couple of minutes as Manning hit on successive passes of 42 yards each, first on a circus catch to Todd Nelson, and then to Bob Ellison to the four yard line. With third and goal and his split end going to the corner of the end zone. A long field goal attempt by Reid, counting on the wind, which seemed to die on him, went short and was run back to give the Vikings the ball on the Lehi 39. Their Q.B. is a junior, along with senior, Sulser as the fullback. They have good size and favor the run, but will pass when the occasion calls for it. They defeated Union last week in a one point game and upset Grantsville two weeks ago so they are capable of a good game. The Pioneers in the past two weeks have suffered two close losses, both by a three point margin to Grantsville and then to Pleasant Grove. However, the Pioneers looked to have come of age against the Vikings as they looked good. The major change will be the running of Raymond Jones at full back and the return of Ray Worthen to the backfield. Moo the Vikings, Todd Nelson hit the receiver and Raymond Jones picked up the fumble to give the Pioneers the ball on the Viking 25. The Pioneers moved to the 13, from there Manning ran it in on a Q B. keeper. PAT was no good and backs. P.G. fumbled on the 35 and Kopinski recovered.-- The Pioneers couldn't move the ball and P.G. took over.
