They were to be part of our legacies. We treasure these handkerchiefs. But now - times have changed. I'll bet many younger women and ladies do not even own a hanky. They just grab a handful of tissues and call it Oppose Gout. Expansion According to a recent survey, an overwhelming proportion of the people in the United States favor a halt t further expansion of governmental services and taxes at this time. This fact was brought out by Utah Foundation, the private research organization, and is based on a recent public opinion survey conducted by the Opinion Research Corporation of Princeton, New Jersey for the U.S. Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations. In response to a query regarding the appropriate level of good. How do they manage to cover their mouths daintily when sneezing? For funerals, yes, wads of soggy tissues will do, but soft clean hankies are still best. My eyes were really opened to the new status of the Hanker-chie- f when I visited my daughter. She laughed and laughed and hugged me indulgently when she saw two front aprons and several hankies folded neatly in my suitcase. Laugh indeed. I remember once Jackie Kennedy had to wipe drippy nose with her fingers cause she didn't have a hanky. My goodness, she was wearing a Kenneth hair-do- , a $10,000 mink coat, long leather boots, Joy Parfum, and No Hanky. ImaJohn-John- governmental services and taxes, 38 percent of the people surveyed favored a decrease in services and taxes and another 45 percent would like to keep taxes and services about where they are. Only five percent claimed that services and taxes should be increased and 12 percent had no opinion. According to the Advisory Commission on Relations, Intergovernmental "the answer was clear and unmistakable - hold the line or retrench." The Foundation report also noted that the survey disclosed that the property tax and the Federal income tax now virtually share the dubious distinction of being considered the "worst tax" by the American people. Some of the antagonism against the property tax has dimished in recent years, however, while the Federal income tax has become more unpopular. In 1972, approximately 45 percent of the people polled regarded the property tax as the worst tax, but this percentage had been reduced to 29 percent by 's gine. Why, what would babies play with in church if the elderly ladies didn't provide a pretty hanky for tiny cradles and peek-a-bo- o games? Didn't you ever kind of surreptiously spit on the corner of a handy to wash a dab of dirt off you junior's face? Many's the time I've tied a few coins into a hanky and sent the kids to the store knowing he'd bring back a loaf of bread and the right change retied in the trusty hanky purse by an understanding clerk. Mom used to wipe fevered brows, sticky fingers and slurpy kisses from faces with her "blow" hanky. The dining tables were decor- ated in yellow and white which are the Club's colors. The color scheme was also carried out on the beautiful birthday cake which was placed in the center of the serving table, which was adorned with yellow chrysanthemums. The favors were yellow bows. The afternoon was spent in playing the game of hearts, prizes being won by Eunice Watkins and Ruby Lee. The gifts for the prizes were beautiful ceramics made by Rose 5 Cook. A very delicious dinner was served to 11 members and three guests, which were former members, Eunice Watkins, Rhea Eddington, and Rose Cook. Hostess for the lovely affair were Beatrice Taylor and Olive Harding, assisted by Helen Christensen. The Athenian Club held its Course, she never used her "show" hanky for such mundane purposes. The Advisory Commission also pointed out that the Federal Government enjoys certain fiscal advantages over state and local governments, particularly in periods of recession. The Foundation report observes that these two findings produce somewhat of a contradiction since revenue sharing is a device for putting more spending power in the hands of state and local units by transferring funds from the Federal Government. Support for revenue sharing, therefore, would indicate a belief that state and local units are able to perform some functions more efficiently than the Federal Government. Popularity of the Federal Government declined markedly in 1974 but recovered somewhat in 1975.
