Many inexperienced hikers feel that a light pair of gym shoes make for easier climbing; however, this is definitely not true. Ankles need support and feet need added protection in mountain climbing. Lehi Family On Utah Lake Four residents of the Lehi area were recovering Monday after spending a chilly Saturday, Saturday night and part of Sunday on a drifting boat on Utah Lake. The four, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Jones and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Gerrard became stranded on the cabin boat when the motor failed about noon Saturday after they had boated for several hours. The boat drifted to the west side of the lake. During the night Mr. Jones left the boat and hiked north until he located a telephone. A relative was notified and arrived shortly after to help the group. A pilot from the Provo airport also spotted the stranded boat and a rescue boat was sent by the sheriffs office. The stranded boat was started, however, before the sheriffs boat arrived. The boaters reported they had plenty of food and safety equipment aboard and did not suffer "except for being cold." With Utah County Sheriff Ralph Chappie in charge of rescue operations, Deputy Dean Kirkham of Lehi, assisted. Joseph Kolan provided the use of his boat and also assisted, with Gerald Turner included in the local rescue party. This is the third time within about a week that he has been called on to assist in rescue operations on Utah Lake, Deputy Kirkham reported. On another recent man assignment, a with a boy were adrift on the lake. Frank Bailey provided his boat to aid in the search. Also assisting Mr. Bailey on the crew was Rex Southwick. On a previous call, with two stranded on the lake, Deputy Kirkham was assisted by Thomas Powers. They spent some four hours checking the harbor and spotting lights during the storm Friday night. Appreciation is expressed to each and all of these local volunteers who so readily gave their support at the time of emergency. nine-year-o- ld , take an extra pair of stockings to keep your feet dry in the snow area. 2. Take a light jacket, one you can carry easily. It will be cold in the early morning hours. 3. Wear a hat of some kind. The sun can blister the face and sap one's energy in thin mountain Also, atmosphere. 4. Sun glasses are optional. They cut down sun glare and tend to enhance the beauty of the scenery. 5. Do not race up the mountain. Take it easy. Rest periodically. 6. Don't make the mistake of eating and hiking at the same time. The stomach is easily upset when having to digest food while the body is involved in vig' orous physical activity. Take a light lunch to eat at Emerald Lake. 7. Drink no more water than is absolutely necessary. 8. Don't break trail as you will dislodge rocks which might roll down the mountain and strike hikers below you. This is the only real danger in the hike. 9. Do not pick flowers. Much natural beauty can be destroyed by 4,000 thoughtless hikers. 10. No motor scooters, please! BUSY BEES 4-CLUB The Busy Bees Club met at the home of their leader, Mrs. Hazel Hakes, July 11. They made sewing kits. Six members were present: Debra Carter, Carolyn Marsha Ross, Elaine Roberts, Chatfield, Lynn Smith and Sylvia Sherwood. Next week they will each make a scarf. The group attended the Sunday Service at the amphitheatre at the State Training School in American Fork. Sylvia Sherwood, reporter 4-- H Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Miller spent Sunday in Helper where they visited with Mr. Miller's sister, Mrs. Rowena Boren, and her son, Donald, who is in the Price Hospital.
