The Registry system has often been referred to as the "bloodstream" of American commerce. In the first year of its operation there were only 600,000 letters carried. Today the total is about 85 million a year, and the value of the items carried runs into billions of dollars. In 1937, the federal government shipped 5 billion dollars worth of gold coin and bullion and silver by Registered Mail from New York and Philadelphia to Fort Knox, Kentucky. The shipment, 11, begun January 1937, was completed June 17, 1937, and weighed nearly 11 million pounds. Love Letters Free?
