Show r Friday, January 24. 1992 The Daily Utah Chronicle Take the Super Bowl XXVI Bills by three in OT The Super Bowl is here again, and thankfully, this year the country's collective eyes will be on Minnesota and not the Middle East But before we get to this year's far less meaningful and harmless football war. lei s answer a mucn-aske- d question regarding this 26th edition of Super First, what in Vince Lombardi's name is doing year's biggest sporting event? Hey, babe, as far as 'Skins superior his potential into game-winnin- Oh Boy! Could it be? Two years in a row? An exciting, mistake-fre- e Super Bowl that comes down to a field goal? No Elway fumbles? No Jerry Rice beating some sorry defensive back by twenty yards on a twenty-thre- e yard TD catch? The Buffalo Bills and the Washington Redskins? Beyond a Scott g team than last year shadow of a doubt, the s two best football teams in the league, playing in the Super Bowl? That's right. But don't get your hopes up. York Giants, but here are four somewhat logical reasons to put Ty Bronicel your bills on the Bills. Chronicle Sports Writer 1) Unlike his exciting and Washington counterpart hosting major sporting events go, Minneapolis is currently on a big-tim- e roll. . In less than a year's time, Minneapolis has hosted golf's U.S. Open Championship, the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, the Stanley Cup Finals, the World Series and, now, the granddaddy of them all. So even though it's bitterly cold there, Minnesota is hip, hot and happening. So are its natives. Prince, Winona Ryder and those "I'm too sexy..." Walsh kids of Beverly Hills, 90210 all hail from Minnesota. As you can see, Minnesota is a cool-c- at kind-of-stat- e. Now to the game. Washington vs. Buffalo. The two best teams in the NFL this year. The makings of a classic Super Bowl, right? Well then, why is the point spread for Sunday's showdown near Motown an seven points (at press time) in favor of the Redskins, and looking to go even higher? eye-poppi- ng Because people have become disillusioned by the outcomes of the AFC and NFC Championships two weeks ago. While Buffalo was escaping from New York with a 10-- 7 win over Denver, Washington was silencing the Lions by a nightmarish 41-1- 0 count. To that I say: So what? Joe Gibbs, Buffalo head coach Marv Levy did not set a curfew for one-pointe- nerve-rackin- g themselves against the WLAF champion London Monarchs first. But it probably won't happen at least not until after this year. It's not such a bad idea, considering the NFC's current eight-gam- e winning streak, heading into Super Bowl XXVI. I know, I know. The Bills. Not the Broncettes, but the Bills. The big, bad Bills. Well, if you've been paying attention lately, the Bills haven't being controversial, outspoken and obnoxious. The Bills are filled with charismatic characters like Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas, Cornelius Bennett and Bruce Smith. The Redskins have the personality of a pond of dead carp. 3) The game, as if you didn't know, will be played on artificial turf. Buffalo plays its home games on the synthetic sod; exactly been playing Super Bowl-calib- that). Not only will the "Hogs" provide Rypien with proper pass protection, but they will also open ample holes for the likes of Earnest Byner, Gerald Riggs and Ricky Ervins, if er defense, finishing 27th in the league in that department for the regular season. Add in the fact that their offense failed to score a touchdown against Denver in the AFC championship and what you have is a team on the skids. Not only have the Bills had problems on the field, but within the last three days, two separate incidents have caused some untimely turbulence in the Bills' camp. First, o defensive end Bruce Smith expressed his desire to leave the Bills after this season, despite having two years left on his contract. o Then, running back Thurman Thomas walked out of breakfast Wednesday morning, upset that Jim Kelly and Smith had been given so much coverage in Wednesday's paper. He also skipped a mandatory team Washington on grass. Enough said. Finally, although he played like vintage Terry Bradshaw during the regular season, I'm still not convinced Redskin quarterback Mark Rypien is a winner. Will necessary. So now you're asking about the Redskins defense. How will they stop the Bills? Three ways: Darrell Green, Monte Coleman and Charles Mann. A combination of talent, coaching, depth and experience gives the 'Skins the advantage over the Bills. Oh yeah, and Scott Norwood's not their kicker. So don't be All-Pr- the pressure of playing before a zillion people, in the universe's biggest football game get to him? We'll see. Final Score: Buffalo 31, Washington 28 (OT). The Bills only think they know. Big difference. Secondly, contrary to the belief that the artificial surface will weigh in the Bills favor, let me remind you that there is no finer set of receivers in the league than the trio of Gary Clark, Ricky Sanders and Art Monk. These three can kill you in any number of ways: deep, over the middle and especially after they've caught the ball. And don't worry about quarterback Mark Rypien not having enough time to get the ball to his receivers, because the poor guy was sacked less than ten times all season (don't tell Jeff George nt boisterous boys from Buffalo might be too hungover to find the Metrodome. 2) The Redskins are boring. The 90s are not about being boring, but rather about Redskins have won a Super Bowl already. I don't care how bad the Chronicle Sports Writer many are r, every way Matt Ott expecting this game to be similar. Although the oddsmakers have put the 'Skins as an favorite, most of my peers early seven-poiseem to think that Buffalo will beat Washington. Personally, I think the AFC's representatives should be required to prove his squad until tonight (the Redskins' lights are out at midnight). That means Levy was allowing his players to have fun the past two weeks, which could lead to a relaxed, triumphant Bills team come Sunday, ala the 1980 bad boy Oakland Raiders and the 1985 renegade Chicago Bears. Then again, come Sunday, the 4) last year's Despite in meeting with the press later that day. For a team who is supposed to be focused on their "only goal" (winning the Super Bowl) they seem to be letting some pretty trivial things bother them. Now that I've covered the reasons whv thp Bills won't win, it's now time to explain whv J .A the Redskins will. For one, many of the last-seco- nd boot in last year's Super Bowl missed by the width of a loaf of bread Buffalo would be going for a repeat, Yes. the Redskins are a decidedly better NFC representative New Sunday.
