Vande Merwe says that he Jonsson Chronicle Feature Writer Every door at the University of Utah has a lock, and for every lock there is a key. If any of you have had to order a key for one of those doors, you might know that it takes a long time for you to get the key back from the key shop. The reason is, says Frits Vande Merwe, (pronounced key shop supervisor, the U. Key Shop has only one man cutting between 100 and 500 keys a day. "This time of year is the busiest Van-de-me- part of the year with everybody coming back on the campus," Vande Merwe said, "I was helping Mel Larsen cut keys all week. We had so many requests. We were cutting 500 a would be grateful if those waiting for keys would be patient. The Key Shop cuts and distributes keys for every door on campus, excluding the hospital, residence halls and University Village. There are approximately 16,000 locks they attend to. They even control the keys for the U. president's house and car. "The new key blanks for the president's car cost about $9 each," Vande Merwe said. "They have a microchip in them, and any key without that microchip will not start the car. GM is making three different microchips." It seems amazing that for every two keys cut and issued, the key shop is lucky to get one back. "There are a lot of students who get keys and don't return them." Despite this seeming breach of security, the key shop is limited in how often it can y campus locks. "We're doing it building by building, and we're trying to get to each one every 10 years." e staff of The key shop has a three locksmiths including Vande re-ke- full-tim- Merwe, and it doesn't have the every lock more funding to y re-ke- often. "Some departments issue more keys than they need to, and don't regulate them too well," said Vande Merwe. "We don't regulate keys," he said. "That's the department's job." He went on to say that it would help out CHRONICLE PH0T0Aot1 Sine Frits Vande Merwe, head of the University of Utah Key Shop, with keys. "For every lock (turn, turn, turn) there is a key (turn, turn, turn)." his department if each department on campus would have one person to regulate key issues. Another interesting point about the U. key situation is that unlike lost library books and outstanding fees, nothing is done when a student does not return a key. "BYU is doing it. They'll charge for a lost key, and they'll charge according to what that key fits. If it's a master key they'll charge more," said Vande Merwe, adding that it would tighten up (UJMDONI security a great deal. "We are trying to convert the whole campus to a high security key system," said Vande Merwe. "There March 20-3- 0 Spring Break are two systems right now, the Medeco and the Assa," said Mel Larsen, who has been cutting keys at the U. for 11 years. "The blanks for both keys are custom made for the U," Vande Merwe said. "The high security lock systems can't be picked, and can't be drilled through," Vande Merwe said. A lot of keys have been reported missing. The shop printout now shows approximately 6,000 lost keys to U. locks. "When a key is reported lost, we report it to security, and security comes and talks to you before we will issue another key," Larsen said. "We have a computer system which can call up the exact pattern we need to cut for each key request." "Of course, some doors on campus have card lock systems which use U. I.D. cards," Vande Merwe said. "The Merrill engineering building has some of them. Everyone who is to have access is programmed in, and after that person is done, they are flushed from the system, which is much more secure than issuing keys."
