Show V Thursday, December 6, 1990 The Daily Utah Chronicle - Page Fifteen Third 'wild card' teams add drama to playoffs Intramural Update By Dave Hosick Chronicle Sports Writer Well, can you believe it? It's December, almost Christmas, finals are upon us, and the NFL season is already 34 over. Time sure goes by fast when you are having fun or letting some saliva string from your mouth while sleeping in class. Anyway, let's get back to more u, Clifton Schmidt Chronicle Sports Writer important things, like football. Already two division titles in the NFL have been wrapped up by the San Francisco 49ers (NFC West) the Chicago Bears (NFC Central) and a third is about ready to be clinched by the New York Giants (NFC East). If this were baseball, there would still be 40 more meaningless games to play. first month of the season, yet they are in the thick of the wild card and Central Division race in the AFC. The Seattle Seahawks are also in the hunt for the wild card. With three wins in their last four games, the team from the great northwest is standing pretty at 6 along with Houston and Pittsburgh. The San Diego Chargers are 7 and can't be counted out and Indianapolis is 7 and also has that extra wild card spot in sight. The only teams really out of the wild card race in the AFC are the 6-- Luckily, the NFL has the wonderful wild cards. And because of league policy changes, there are going to be three of those "one-eye- d jack" teams in this year's playoffs instead of the usual two. The playoffs will be formatted so that in the first round, the two winningest wild card teams in their respective conferences will play each other. Also, the lowest wild card team in the conference will play the division winning team with the worst record in that conference. Confused? It gets even better. The next week, the wild card game winner will meet the second winningest team in the conference, while the wild carddivision game winner will meet the conference's top team. Those two winners meet for the conference championship the next week. The Super Bowl will be played the following week with no week off after the conference championships. The AFC division titles are tight races between two or three teams. Buffalo and Miami are fighting it out in the East, the Raiders of L.A. and the Kansas City Chiefs are tied for the West lead, and as usual, nobody wants to win the Central. The big fight, though, is that with the extra wild card team in the playoffs, teams that were terrible at the beginning of the season could make the playoffs. Take a look at Pittsburgh for example. The Steelers didn't even score an offensive touchdown for the bragging rights to the crown. For the Sigma Nu team, they defeated Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Melayu-MasKappa Rigma and Team Geritol to stake their claim to the championship. 6-- 5-- pitiful Patriots, the bombarded Browns, the junky Jets, and the demised Denver Broncos. In the NFC, nobody has a lock on a wild card spot. Can you believe that the Minnesota Vikings who were the biggest disappointment of the early season have an excellent chance at the playoffs. With a five game winning streak, the Vikes stand at 6 and are tied with the Green Bay Packers. Both are only one game behind Philadelphia and Washington. with Walking away intramural soccer tournament championships last week were the Granville Grenade and the Sigma Nu team, as Napolean basketball and volleyball titles will be earned this week; Soccer: On their way to the crown; the Granville Grenades gathered wins over the Biohazards, Dekum Blues and The Sinners. Dallas has won two straight games at home for the first time since 1985 and are only one game back of the Pack and the Vikes. the Cowboys finish Standing at off the season against Phoenix, and Atlanta, Philadelphia. Realistically, they could finish 8 and nab that third wild card spot, and that's no terminological inexactitude. The Atlanta Falcons are about the only team that doesn't have a chance at gaining a playoff spot with their 9 6-- 7, 8-- 3-- record. So even though some playoff spots are taken, there are still plenty out there for the rest of the league.
