Although Ludmudrov decisions for improvement, since his deanship isn't When foreign students arrive in the United States, they face more challenges than just a strange language; they must also overcome culture shock, myths and prejudice. However, the University of Utah has programs in place that can help them surpass these obstacles. Two years ago, Grethe Peterson, wife of President Chase Peterson, created a committee to address the problems of the university's foreign student population. Some of the programs, designed to help newcomers feel more integrated into U.S. culture, are English permanent, he said. Permanent decisions would be difficult to make, since "we don't want to undercut the perogotives of the new dean," classes, social events and a system of host families. Committee chair Marilyn Barker said the primary goal is to help foreign guests feel welcome and gain an accurate understanding of what American culture really is. "The biggest problem is that many people come to this country with myths about what America is about. And worse, if they are not shown otherwise, these myths can be enlarged when they go back home," Barker said. One myth that foreigners bring to the U.S. is the idea inferred from watching American-produce- d television and movies that life here violence. is full of never-endin- g Barker cites the example of a young see "hosts" on page three is a superb leader, it is very difficult for him to make permanent students successful By Bill Dunford Chronicle Assistant News Editor liberal Lubmudrov, education acting dean, said. One of the reasons it is taking a long time to fill the position is the search for a new dean was late getting started, Newell said. "That was a serious problem." "In April of 1989, I gave the administration notice that I would leave in June of 1990, but the search for the new dean wasn't started until November of 1989, about 6 months after I gave notice," Newell said. Another problem which made hiring a new dean difficult was that two administrative vice presidents, James Clayton and Joseph Taylor, left their positions, he said. "Because of all the turmoil associated with hiring new vice presidents," hiring a new liberal education dean was put in the background. Another obstacle in the hiring process is that it was difficult to interest professors vice president, who is in charge of hiring a new dean, said. Mclntyre, who began her . position in August of 1990, said that, although there is not yet a new dean, her office is "working with different groups to make it clear we are committed to excellence in undergraduate education." Integration of undergraduate initiatives, such as the writing and mentoring programs, are "continuing in full force under the direction of my office," she said.
