Show Chronicle - Page Six Thursday, February 23, 1989 PORT Lady 'Ute' tankers in third place Dirk Facer Upstarts holding their own against HCAC's best Special to the Chronicle FORT COLLINS, Colo.-T- his is what the Lady Ute swimmers have been waiting for. This is the big one. The High Country Athletic Conference championships began Wednesday on the Colorado State University cam- and for the Lady Utes, this weekend may turn out to Eus, fitting end to a productive season. As the first day of competition ended, Utah stood in third place behind CSU and BYU with an overall first-da- y point total of 109. CSU and BYU tallied 228 and 143 respectively. has been a successful season for us so far and we think it can continue this week," Coach Jim Wilson said "It before Wednesday's competition. "We usually swim well at conference meets and usually give the favorites all they can handle." Wednesday at the CSU pool, the Lady Utes didn't really blow away any of the tough competition, but they did hold their own. That outing seemed to be a reflection on the Utah season: never winning by huge margins, but always putting forth good times in each event. d In the medley relay, the Lady Utes captured third place with a time of 1:50.60. In the 500 freestyle, Kathy Pierce, one of Utah's four top freshmen, took fourth place with a 5:04.91 time. Eva Hjelm finished the event in 5:15.13 for a seventh-plac- e finish. Jenny Speth finished the race with a 5:16.13 time, good enough for eighth place. see "HCAC" on page seven , 200-yar- Utes ffoir The Utes, who stand at 3 overall and 7 in Western Athletic Conference play, however, will be hoping for revenge on the Falcons, who bring a 8 league record into tonight's contest. Air Force had little difficulty posting a 7 victory over the Utes in the Huntsman Center back on Jan. 26 with Dudley ' doing most of the damage. "We're going to double team (Dudley) some and try to keep him from getting to the ball," Utah Coach Lynn Archibald said of defending the Falcons' stellar guard. "We'll start with either (Jimmy) Madison or (Jon) Hansen on him. "He and (Robyn) Davis are probably the best in the league," he continued. "We just need to n sound defense. You can't get behind play " 14-1- 5-- 6-- In the old days, a trip to Colorado Springs for the Runnin' Utes would have been just the cure for an ailing basketball team. But that was then and this is now. Translated, Utah's matchup with Air Force tonight will be no cakewalk. And if the Utes are to end their e losing skid, they will need to do two things: start one, shooting the ball with more accuracy, and two, put the defensive clamps on junior Falcon guard Raymond Dudley. The Utes will also need to control the Falcons' front-- . court trio of Mark Slimko, Mike Lockwood and Chad Kimble. The Utes, losers in four of their last seven games, have, been hampered by inconsistency from the field all .year. Utah is shooting-thball at a 47 'percent clip-f- or the season-six- th in the conference. From three-poirange the Utes are even less successful and are a , eighth in the WAC. Despite the Utes' recent troubles, Archibald maintains his team's positive morale has remained intact. "Our morale is fine, but mentally it's tough," the Utah coach explained. "Last weekend really drained us. If we win those games we have a chance to win the conference championship and now, until (the team) can go out and itself, it's tough." Utah's Mitch Smith will be trying to become only the second player in Runnin' Ute history to score more than 1,500 points while grabbing 1,000 rebounds. Going into tonight's contest, Smith needs only 14 d boards to reach the plateau. Grant has been the Utes' steadiest performer Josh as of late and is coming off three of his best performances of the year. Grant had the fifth-bereboundin Utah ing day history as he snatched 19 boards during the Utes' loss to New Mexico last Thursday e am st ds man-to-ma- IMMERSE YOURSELF IN FITNESS " two-tim- : ; MOW INTERVIEWING ON CAMPUS wi mm mwm mm Research study spring quarter using Hydrotone resistive aquatic exercise equipment . So as a service to the loyal readers of the. Chronicle sports section, I proudly present this provocative ' . sports roundup. Did you hear the news ... the Major Indoor Soccer League voted to expand to eight teams next season. Joining the circuit in the 1989-9- 0 campaign will be the Cleveland Crunch. My only concern here is if the MISL knows whether Ohio soccer fans prefer Crunch Berries or Peanut Butter Crunch, because anyone willing to pay to watch the MISL certainly deserves a good break-faand possibly a good psychiatrist. Did you hear the news . . . former NFL running back O.J. Simpson is scheduled to be arraigned March 10 on one count of spousal battery. However, as sad as this situation is, it is not true that the Juice is suffering from flashback episodes in which he views his wife as a linebacker. Yack 'em, smack 'em O.J., been a bad boy. you've Did you hear the news . . . Sugar Ray Leonard t and Thomas "Hitman" Hearns are preparing for yet another rematch June 12 in Las Vegas. This meeting is being dubbed as "The War?' But any- one who cares would quickly redub it "The Bore." Oh well, where else but in America could Leonard ($13 million) and Hearns ($11 million) accumulate such a profitable windfall for a lack, luster rerun. Wonder if the original casts of Hawaii Five-- and Three's Company will be watching with interest. e Did you hear the news . . . Olympic gold medalist volleyball players Karch Kiraly and Steve Timmons are the two newest models for Calvin Klein underwear ads. It could be worse, I guess. What if Terry Forester or Mel Turpin were doing the modeling? Besides, a' recent survey indicates that 4 out of 5 women prefer underwear models who have gold medals. Did you hear the news . .'. the New Hampshire college basketball team is seeing spots. A measles epidemic has hit the Manchester, N.H., campus and subsequently the school's hoop team has had to postpone recent games with Siena and Hartford. It's too bad, it seems to me, that the "red scare" would really help clear the lane for the ailing New Hampshirites. Did you hear the news. . . Mike Tyson has made another brilliant decision. In lieu of a $10 million breach of contract suit by his former manager Kevin Rooney, Tyson declared that Rooney would never be his manager again. Wonder how come? see "Facer" on page seven . 67-5- ?
