Medina Chronicle staff writer natural. ' For an artist, whether a professional or, a student, a piece of work may be very personal. It can truly become an extension of its maker. And as many University of Utah art majors have said, one can feel vulnerable when showing one's work in public, thus opening the door to criticism. Especially since, it seems, everyone has an opinion about art. The the naive and the ignorant all suddenly feel a need to make known their recommendations. j And while it should never be an art student's main concern, wanting someone to value your work is only well-informe- d, Unfortunately, other than the U. art department's annual student show, students have few opportunities to exhibit their work. Local galleries and museums have neither the time nor the resources to offer students '. exhibits. s'-''7' ; : Yet there is probably no better learning experience for an art student than an opportunity to publicly show his or her work. Knowing that others will be seeing your work can make a big difference. It can make it a lot easier to generate that extra motivation and to spend more time and effort perfecting a particular piece. There is one gallery, however, little known to most, that is dedicated almost solely to U. faculty and student work. ' The Union Showcase Gallery, although located on the main floor of the Union building, remains unknown to most students.. U. student Jake Martinez said, "I always wondered what went on in there. Now I pass it so often I don't even . realize it's there anymore." For those with similar experiences, now is a good time to find out. The Showcase Gallery is hosting a student exhibit featuring the various works of many U art stus dents. : Gallery curator Dana Trethewey explains that the majority of the pieces on display are art class assign- ments. Because most students are busy with assigned work, they have little time to work on their own. see "union gallery" on page thirteen Give from the heart. r M J 1 MfWM;fwr" V"" . . wmnn w. 9 Rhf !
