Show Chronicle - Page Seven Wednesday, February 22, 1989 Candidates who erred need to pull heads out Editor: I feel the Elections Committee was suffering from a dumb-as- s attack when it decided to "fine" those . who failed to turn in their financial reports on time. Everyone who chose to run for office received the same rule that stated: The final financial disclosure form must be turned in before noon on Feb. 16, or Assembly you will be disqualified." Thirty-nin- e candidates failed to turn in their reports by this "deadline." Since the Assembly , is responsible for allocating $600,000 of student fees I hope this is no indication of the mentality or responsibility of those representing us. It is great that our system allows us to elect these people. However, these people should have some responsibility to go with their popularity. I was running for Assembly and lost in the primary election, so many people should question my selfish motives. If this happens again, I think the Elections Committee should get up off their stomachs and take some real action! On yean, one other question, what is the Elections Committee planning to do with its extra $390 it collected in "fines"? If you ask me, I think they should buy all those elected into Assembly a new belt with their office stamped on it. That way when they pull their heads out of their asses they'll know what office their in! . a sore loser, Sincerely, - Ben Dover College of Business - One-yea- r with which they've been criticized reflects that these critics allowed themselves to hope that the "Whookies" would really rock the boat and they now common, inevitably repeated claims: 1. "We're going to get students involved." Translation: We really have ourselves convinced that we're going to get students involved. So, we'll do a survey of student interests, or start a hotline, or a committee of student leaders, or put an ad in the Chronicle, or. . . .And they're right! Of the approximately 5 percent of the student body who even bother to vote, those who would get involved with ASUU anyway will leap at these inspired outlets for involvement. 2. "We have experience." Translation: We've already been Assembly andor cabinet members, or somehow involved with ASUU. Therefore, we know how to perpetuate the same boring, inept crap more than anyone else. Vote for us! . feel cheated. hat action-althou- $5). After all this, it is probably no surprise that I support the "CHOICE" initiative. Critics say we should leave well enough alone, ASUU is not well enough. There is no candidate or current set procedure that can turn ASUU into the dynamic and potent organization it ought to be. We need to rock the structure a bit. The best way for students to do that is through the funding, which is sucked out of our pockets each quarter, whether we think it's a good deal or not. 3. "We're different." They all say this. Need I say more? 4. "A lot of candidates say they're different, but they're not. We really are different." See number three above. 5. "We're going to make a difference." Yawn. Get the picture? . Matthew Haun The "Whookies" have taken a lot of heat for galloping into office on the (implicit) promise of joyful subversion and exuberant anarchy, and then firing getting caught in the same grungy games-e.- g. I think for members cabinet junior this criticism is only partially deserved. The "Who Cares? Party" maintained a who cares attitude during the election. However, their subsequent activities have indicated to me that they did care a bit. They did want to make something work. The "Whookies" were, in fact, genuinely different. However, like non-cooperatio- can "t reform ASUU cow - Editor: It has just occurred to me that most freshmen and sophomores haven't really known any ASUU regimes other than our own incumbent "Whookies,'' I would like to offer my services as a translator, so those with less experience might understand the campaign rhetoric. There is no one you can point to and say, "Stop doing that!" ASUU is a bureaucratic organism with set policies, procedures, funding and parameters of activity.
