Show The Daily Utah Chronicle, Thursday, October Page Seven 17, 1985 SPORTS An 'honest' Fassel is unsure on which Aztecs he'll face by John Voungren Sports Editor Utah Coach Jim Fassel's pretty honest about things going into Saturday's game with San Diego State. He's not sure which Aztec team will show up Saturday night in San Diego. "San Diego State is a team that can one week play very well and the next week not play well at all," Fassel said. Echoing Fassel's feelings is his counterpart to the South, BYU's La Veil Edwards, whose team pummeled the last weekend in Provo. "San Diego State doesn't always play as well against us as they do other people," Edwards said. "(Aztec quarterback) Todd Santos didn't have the type of game he had been having against us." Aztecs 28-- 0 Nevertheless Ute Coach Fassel also wonders which one of his own teams will show up Saturday: Will it be the mighty Ute squad that thrashed UTEP and Wyoming? Or will it be the Utes that lost to Arizona State after scoring 27 points in the last quarter? "We played a good final quarter a good eight minutes," Fassel said. "The problem is, you can't play just eight minutes of a football game. And the Ute coach again said something he's been saying all season: "We just didn't hit on all cylinders on our offense," Fassel said. "And once they got the lead they started coming at us." The Utes have been inconsistent offensively all day season-Satur- night it caught up with them. The San Diego State game will be the second of three in a row on the road for Utah, which saw its record dashed to 1 overall last week in its first loss of the season. The Utes, who finished seventh, 47 strokes off winner New Mexico's pace last week, only improved three strokes in Ogden but finished five places higher. "They (Weber State) played excellently. To beat BYU's tourney record so easily was incredible," Ute Coach Ron Branca said. "Weber is an excellent team and it is difficult to defeat a team that plays that well." Utah was again led by the duo of Jay Thorseth and Blair Phillip, who have been playing consistently all year long. Thorseth, a senior from Rapid City, S.D., shot an even par 219, which was good enough for sixth place. Phillip was not far behind with a final score 22 1 in a tournament with local flavor. Besides Utah and Weber State, Utah State, Idaho State, Boise State and Southern Utah State all competed. Branca had a good chance to see how some of his younger players perform under tournament conditions as he took them to the Ev Thorpe Invitational in Logan last Monday and Tuesday. "With only us and three other teams playing, it wasn't a great tournament but it did give some of the younger kids some valuable experience," Branca said. |
