Ron Spinelli, a psychologist and assistant director of the Counseling Center, along with Diane Kecastro, a second-yegraduate student and teaching assistant in the School of Social Work, will be leading the workshop. The main purpose, Spinelli said, is to ar assist and train students in coping techniques. These techniques are most effective for students in performance situations where anxiety causes reduced functioning, he said. A stressful performance situation could include anything associated with learning like or classroom participation, social encounters or even athletic anxiety. The skills we teach are very basic, Kecastro said. "They are applicable to test taking or to dating." The workshop will attempt to address every aspect of stress, Spinelli said. Emotional, cognitive, behavioral and physical factors will be explored. test-taki- ng E3 FREE . I I4a JIllllllllMIIII . . Some have migraine headaches, others are prone to ulcers and gastric distress and still others face cardiovascular problems. Stress is recognizable in its most dramatic form, but most people aren't aware they have it until it beats them over the head, Spinelli said. Under pressure individuals tend to think differently than they do when they are calm. Spinelli said they are self critical and self punitive. They also and magnify their problems. All these symptoms and habits of stress can be changed, Spinelli said. Both he and Nccastro say their program is more inclusive and holistic, but does require over-exaggera- te effort. Our society tends to be "right now" oriented, Spinelli said. "You know, let me have a Valium for stress." But a Valium, or any other temporary reliever, does not address the entire aspect of anxiety and also does not offer any lasting solutions.
