Maybe it did. And maybe it didn't. Utah fell behind Arizona State, 34-- 0, here Saturday night, before staging furious O "Utah got the momentum and things got out of hand," Sun Devil coach John TEMPE, Ariz. Saturday's game was 5-- G c a rally that cut the final margin to 34-2- 7. It was hoped that the decision would finally tell whether the Utes are a fairly good football team that went 0 against mediocre teams, or a legitimate "top 20" fourth-quart- er 5-- squad. The showing Saturday night makes one think the former is accurate. For most of the game, it appeared the Utes wouldn't even score, let alone win. But in the fourth quarter, it all turned around. Utah only gained a total of 144 yards through three periods, but came back strong in the fourth quarter as ASU seemed to let up, thinking they had the game in hand. Arizona State also substituted freely after they had gained their advantage. ASU coach John Cooper said he gave his second and third stringers playing time to give them experience. The Utes scored their touchdowns the last four times they touched the ball, earning back some of the respect they lost in the first three quarters. 34-poi- nt Cooper said. Trailing 34-- Utah started its first real drive of the game early in the fourth quarter. Twelve plays and 88 yards later, Larry Egger hit Eddie Johnson for the touchdown. From then on out, it was all Utah. After the kickoff, Utah forced ASU to punt. And it was right then that ASU learned just how much of a gamebreaker Utah's Erroll Tucker is. Tucker took the punt on his own 11, swerved left down the sideline and didn't stop until he hit the ASU goal line, cutting the deficit to 4 with only 5:30 left in the a 0, 34-1- il l game. "Erroll has the capability to do that every time he gets the ball," Utah coach Jim Fassel said after the game. "We went to sleep," Cooper said in an explanation of Tucker's return. After holding ASU again, Utah went to work again. On a third-andplay from the ASU 39, Egger scrambled and then appeared to throw a desperation toss into the end zone. The pass looked to be headed for James Hardy, but landed in the hands of a surprised Loren Richey. "We were hoping for something good to happen," Richey said. "I don't like to admit it, but I just happened to be in the right place at the right time."
